International Women’s Day: Measuring What Matters

As we wrap up March, we reflect on the momentum of International Women’s Day and the vital role women play in advancing climate and environmental solutions worldwide.

Across our W+ projects — from solar irrigation to forest restoration and community-based conservation — women are not only participating in climate action; they are leading it. Yet too often, their contributions remain undervalued or invisible within traditional finance and policy systems.

Our commitment goes beyond recognition. Through the W+ Standard, we ensure that women’s empowerment outcomes are measured, verified, and valued — from income and assets to knowledge, leadership, time, and well-being.

By linking gender equality with climate finance and market-based mechanisms, we are helping to shift systems so that women’s contributions are no longer an afterthought, but a central metric of success.

Looking back on International Women’s Day, we are reminded that climate solutions are stronger, more equitable, and more sustainable when women lead — and when their impact is counted.



Project Spotlight: Ghana

W+ Standard in Ghana’s Shea Landscape

Emissions Reduction Project

This month we’re excited to feature one of the first Green Climate Fund-funded projects to apply the W+ Standard — the Ghana Shea Landscape Emissions Reduction Project (GSLERP).

The project, implemented with the Forestry Commission of Ghana, the UN Development Programme, the Global Shea Alliance, and supported by the UN-REDD Programme, is restoring degraded shea parklands while putting women at the heart of climate action.

Using the W+ Standard, the project has systematically measured and quantified women’s empowerment outcomes across northern Ghana, and the results have now been verified. Across more than 6,000 participating women, the assessment shows significant improvements in knowledge, education, income generation, and asset ownership.

The results indicate that over 85% of participants increased their knowledge and skills, 72% reported higher or more stable incomes, and 65% gained improved access to productive assets and financial resources. These outcomes have generated over 6,000 verified W+ credits, recognising measurable progress in women’s empowerment.

By centering women in cultivation, cooperative strengthening, business skills training, and quality control, the project has expanded economic opportunities while supporting landscape restoration and more resilient livelihoods. The initiative demonstrates how investing in women’s leadership and enterprise can deliver measurable social and environmental outcomes at scale.
