More than 30 news outlets from across the United States reported on the indigenous advocacy events in Washington, DC this week to reauthorize the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act and expand coverage to more miners and downwinders.

A glimpse into our office's week

Indigenous Advocates Call on Speaker Johnson to Pass RECA

This week, more than 50 advocate from across the Southwest visited Washington to keep the pressure on the House and Speaker Johnson to pass Senate bill 3853, the Radiation Exposure Compensation Reauthorization Act. President Nygren and Speaker Curley marched with the advocates from NNWO to the US Capitol, where they were joined by numerous Congressional members for a press conference.

President Nygren Meets with Homeland Security Secretary

Ahead of the RECA events on Tuesday, President Nygren met with Secretary Mayorkas, who leads the Department of Homeland Security, to discuss MMIP challenges, the burdensome REAL ID regulation and their implications on tribal sovereignty, amongst other issues.

President Nygren Testifies in Support of Water Rights Bills

On Wednesday, President Nygren delivered testimony to the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs supporting S. 4998, the Navajo Nation Rio San José Stream System Water Rights Settlement Act of 2024 and S. 4633, the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement Act of 2024.

Navajo Nation Public Schools Advocate for Increased Impact Aid Funding

Leaders and advocates from the Navajo Nation Public Schools attended the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools Conference in Washington to call on congress to expand support for their students.
