WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
| |
The History of everyone who exists
or has ever existed began with their mother.
Women's History Month for me began with Ouida Fay McClendon Wright of Ozark, Alabama. A glimpse of her "Everywoman" story is at www.lovereunited.org and in this Florida Times Union Article. "Sweet Fay" as she was called by those close to her, was a mother of four, Jackie, Joe, Stanley and Phyllis, with the love of her life, a U.S. Army soldier, Sp5 Wyley Wright Jr.

| HISTORY IS AS CLOSE AS 'AROUND THE WAY' | | | |
As I took a moment in December to apologize for not having yet reached out in person to console Mrs. Mildred Ridley Dent about the passing of her stalwart family first husband of 60 years, Mr. Tommie Lee Dent, I found that Mrs. Dent one of the Cedar Hills Subdivision mothers of Columbus, Georgia had suffered yet another loss. Her sister "DOT" had passed. Soon the conversation of consolation morphed into one about "Women's History and World History" for that matter.
"Aunt Dot," as my sister Phyllis (who I raised from the time she was ten years old) called Mrs. Dent sister, gave me no hint of the fact that her close neighborhood friends Joyce and Phyllis Dent were part of a history-making family. To say that my sister lived at the Dents would be an understatement. Phyllis Wright, now Cameron, was spiritually adopted into the Dent Family. The Dents had five children with my sister added to the crew.
That spiritual adoption by the Dents went well into the years after the Dent Family around the corner raised their children Joyce, Phyllis, Evon, and Tommie Jr., all the while Mr. & Mrs Dent worked hard at their food industry jobs (He at Sunshine Biscuit/Kelloggs & she at Tom Foods-- major employers in Columbus.) Daily, Mr. Dent found time to work on his vegetable garden, an anomaly in the up and coming upscale Black neighborhood of Cedar Hills, just south of the Sandhill section of Fort Benning, GA.
The Dents were a part of the Wrights' story when they held us up through the inconceivable journey of exhuming our parents after 50 and 44 years to be reburied at Arlington National Cemetery during its 150th Anniversary... Just like good neighbors they were always right there.
At the historic Green Acres Cemetery in Columbus, GA, Mildred Dent and Tommie Lee Dent Speak with veteran news anchor for WRBL TV Phil Scoggins & stand with Jackie Wright, their daughter Joyce Dent Fitzpatrick, (now Chief of Police for the Columbus, GA,) Joe Wright (8-15-1955-2-23-2022) and Phyllis Wright Cameron, March 3, 2014 days before the reburial of "The Love Separated in Life.. Love Reunited" couple Sp5 Wyley Wright Jr. & Ouida F. Wright on March 10, 2014 at Arlington National Cemetery. Sp5 Wright , who died as an honor guard for U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara in Vietnam, March 9, 1964, had been buried in a segregated cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida for 50 years and "the love of his life" Ouida F. Wright, who died March 9, 1970 of pancreatic cancer, had been buried at Green Acres Cemetery for 44 years.

"Aunt Dot" was a signicant part of the impetus for the Women's Rights Movement of the '70's in the U.S. as a co-founder of Ms. Magazine and a mentor to Gloria Steinem.
"Aunt Dot" organized the first shelter for battered women in New York City and co-founded the New York City Agency for Child Development.
Born in Lumpkin, Georgia, Dorothy Pitman Hughes' fight for the equality of Women was borne from her vision of helping the babies in need in New York City. Her advocacy for children and witnessing the injustice of her father's death believed to be by the Ku Klux fueled her to make demands in the moments of need for better living conditions that ultimately changed the world.

That spirit of trailblazing permeates the Dent Family with many accomplished members. One example is the rise of Joyce Dent Fitzpatrick to the position Assistant Chief of Police in Columbus, Georgia. History makers are all around us and many are our neighbors. If only we'd take time to see how we are connected.

The honorable Bennie G. Thompson of Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District was the keynote speaker for the February 27th Black History Month Breakfast "Your Voice Matters. "Aunt Dot" is proud of the children of her family including nieces Joyce and Phyllis, who groomed former NFL standout Philip Wheeler. Aunt Dot's nieces include actress Gabourey Sidibe.

From the Office of Julie Castro Abrams
As a woman leader, everything that you do is an opportunity to redefine the world we live in. This is the first generation of us, my friends. It is up to us to change structures that weren’t designed for us—and make them better for everyone. So throughout the month of March, we are featuring women across the globe who are changing the landscape.
Women’s History Month is both a celebration and acknowledgment of what women have contributed to the world and their journey of getting there. We understand that the playing field for women is not equal, especially for women of color, but we stand together in making unprecedented opportunities for women and girls.
In honor of Women’s History Month, How Women Lead is launching a series of events to uplift the voices in our community and create a place where women feel seen and heard. This collective of women are paving the way for women in our community and in the world. We invite you to join us at these upcoming events, read Julie's recent blog post on how women can support women, follow the stories we share on How Women Lead and How Women Invest LinkedIn pages, and tune in every Wednesday for a powerful How Women Inspire podcast episode.
