STRATEGIC CONTROL SYSTEMS IN A WORK FROM HOME (WFH) ENVIRONMENT

Back in 1995, Professor Robert Simons wrote the "bible" of control systems. It is absolutely worth a read, especially if you are interested in learning how more revenue can end up as net income. There's nothing more frustrating than working hard each and every month and realizing there's nothing left after everything and everyone else is paid. How do we fix that?

This is especially important in the current pandemic where a "Work From Home" (WFH) environment means we don't physically see as many of our team members each day. How should our control systems change in this new reality? This newsletter gives you the basics. (Image Credit: Harvard Business School)
BEFORE YOU CAN ADJUST TO WFH, YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE BASICS

We get into business to make a profit. Even if our aim is to make money so we can give most away to charity, like CAS Members Ex Novo Brewing (Portland, Oregon and Corralles, New Mexico), we can't scale our philanthropic giving unless we make a profit first. The exciting part is that if we make a profit, then we can scale it and increase our impact overall. Strategic control systems aim to ensure more of your revenue ends up as net income --> Profit!!

We offer several content pieces to give you the basics. I recommend reading/watching/listening to the content in the following order:

EMPOWERING EMPLOYEES TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS IN A WORK FROM HOME ENVIRONMENT

Implementing your strategy in a work from home environment comes down to one simple question: Will your team members make the right decisions when nobody is watching? This is particularly important when we don't have the luxury of meeting in person to answer questions and observe behaviors. Fortunately, there is a brilliant scholar down at UC Berkeley, Jennifer Chatman, who says if you have a strong company culture, employees are more likely to do the right thing even when no one is watching. How do you build a strong culture? Start with these resources.

FEATURED MEMBER OF THE MONTH
ANNIE JONES
SENIOR FINANCIAL ANALYST
CRAFT BREW ALLIANCE
Annie Jones is a former student who has now become a great friend and someone I regularly seek advice from related to brewpub operations, financial analysis, and how to live life intentionally! Yes, the student has become the teacher and I couldn't be more proud of all she has accomplished in such a short time. Originally trained as an industrial engineer, I remember Annie approached me as her MBA instructor and plainly said: "Whatever it takes, keg washing, serving, delivery, marketing... I'll do whatever it takes to become a part of this amazing industry."

Annie has used her drive, talent, and zest for life to become a rising star at one of the world's most respected craft breweries. Plus, she gets to live in paradise while managing operations in Hawaii!! I'm so lucky to call you my friend and to recognize you as the September 2020, CAS Member of the Month!

P.S. - Please tell your mom I'm sorry I talked you out of that Intel job so many years ago....
