WORD TO THE WISE

Greetings!
MEET ANNIE JONES
SENIOR FINANCIAL ANALYST AT CRAFT BREW ALLIANCE

SEPTEMBER 2020 CAS MEMBER OF THE MONTH!

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA where I studied Industrial Engineering at Pitt. After graduating in 2014, I moved to Portland, got a job at Intel and began working on my MBA at the University of Portland.

I quickly fell in love with craft beer and have a clear memory of the exact moment on the first day of Sam's class when I realized the beer industry is where I belong.

Now, I've just celebrated my three-year anniversary at Craft Brew Alliance; and my one-year anniversary of living on the Big Island of Hawaii is right around the corner! My time at CBA has been spent in Financial Planning and Analysis, first based in Portland, responsible for the financials of CBA's several brew pubs across the country; and now based in Hawaii, handling the financials of the pubs, production, and wholesale business on the Islands. There's been a lot of buzz about the deal(s) between CBA, A-B, and PV Brewing, and I'm excited for whatever the future brings.

Through all of the changes, I'm so glad to be a CAS member. The connections I've made as a part of this community leave me feeling like I always know who to call for advice when I'm facing a new challenge. Image Credit: Annie Jones

CRAFT BEER PROFESSIONALS MEMBERS CLICKING ON OUR CONTENT ABOUT EXPANDING THEIR BREWERIES

More and more members of Craft Beer Professionals (CBP) are enjoying free access to our content and community for the rest of 2020. DEFINITELY the most clicked content by new members has to do with expansion. Yes, you heard that correctly, despite the challenges of the global pandemic, small breweries are growing and seeking new venues to sell more beer and simultaneously social distance. How should a small brewery look at expansion? We've got you covered.

CEASE AND DESIST

Despite our best efforts to brand our companies in ways that reflect our core values, sometimes someone else got there first. Just this week, CAS Members in The Netherlands, formerly Vagabund Brewery had to rename their venture due to some trademark issues they were initially unaware of. Now known as Rabauw, check out their thoughtful response.

I know for a fact that several CAS members have had similar problems with beer names, brewery names, and other trademark issues. Would you like to start a discussion on best practices? Email Sam Holloway and if he can't answer your questions, we've got a team of attorneys that can and will help you navigate the tricky areas of trademark law.

FEATURED MEMBER OF THE MONTH
ANNIE JONES
SENIOR FINANCIAL ANALYST
CRAFT BREW ALLIANCE
Annie Jones is a former student who has now become a great friend and someone I regularly seek advice from related to brewpub operations, financial analysis, and how to live life intentionally! Yes, the student has become the teacher and I couldn't be more proud of all she has accomplished in such a short time. Originally trained as an industrial engineer, I remember Annie approached me as her MBA instructor and plainly said: "Whatever it takes, keg washing, serving, delivery, marketing... I'll do whatever it takes to become a part of this amazing industry."

Annie has used her drive, talent, and zest for life to become a rising star at one of the world's most respected craft breweries. Plus, she gets to live in paradise while managing operations in Hawaii!! I'm so lucky to call you my friend and to recognize you as the September 2020, CAS Member of the Month!

P.S. - Please tell your mom I'm sorry I talked you out of that Intel job so many years ago....
