OREGON CHEMIST AND BREWER BRINGS HOPE AND PASSION TO KESENNUMA, JAPAN'S BLACK TIDE BREWING
I was introduced to James Watney by a mutual friend and learned of his dream of using craft beer to help revitalize Kesennuma, Japan. You may recall that the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 completely decimated the fishing industry and port of Kesennuma. The resurgence of this town and its people is a story worth sharing and James Watney's role in bringing craft beer to help this community makes him our June 2020 CAS Member of the Month!
BLACK TIDE BREWING (KESENNUMA, JAPAN)

A Ph.D. chemist, James Watney has 13 years brewing experience, including training at two famous breweries. James quickly fell in love with Kesenuuma and agreed to move there to become head brewer at Black Tide Brewing. Situated right in the heart of the rebuilt harbor, Black Tide Brewing now operates a canning line, production facility and tasting room. James has been active on our forums asking questions about keg tracking and also giving insights on how craft beer in Japan has its own unique challenges. See below for some great pictures of his progress! (Image Credits: Black Tide Brewing).

FEATURED MEMBER OF THE MONTH
James Watney
Head Brewer
Black Tide Brewing
Kesenumma, Japan
When I met James Watney, he informed me of his "Starbucks Rule." That rule is that if anything interesting and beneficial to his career costs less than his daily Starbucks coffee, he was in. Fortunately for our community, CAS membership costs far less than a daily cup of coffee. James was our first member to be based in Japan and I am thrilled with the progress he's made for Black Tide Brewing. Thank you, James for your energy and enthusiasm. I am certain the people of Kesennuma are benefitting from your great beer and the community building Black Tide Brewing has brought to the region.
