HOW TO TALK TO YOUR LANDLORDS AND LENDERS DURING COVID-19
The CAS community isn't solely made up of brewing entrepreneurs. We have a lot of industry specialists and, from time to time, our members like to author content to help others navigate challenges. I am very pleased to share CAS Member Thad Fisco's new blog: A Helping Hand For Cash Strapped Breweries.

Thad has authored some proactive content for us before and behind his bold words sits a unique perspective. I believe Thad is the only CAS member that is a brewery owner, landlord to other breweries, and also a brewing equipment fabricator. Few people have his perspective and this week he shares his ideas for how to work with your landlords and lenders to (potentially) skip a month's rent and stay alive in a mutually beneficial and ongoing tenant / landlord relationship.
BACKWOODS BREWING OPENS A TEMPORARY DRIVE-IN THEATER
As we discussed last week, CAS member breweries are coming up with some very creative responses to COVID-19. Faced with government closures of all restaurants and taprooms, many members have begun home delivery and offering "to-go" and "curbside" service to keep their employees working and to keep the beer flowing. Perhaps the most fun and innovative (even if it wasn't hugely profitable) solution comes from our friends at Backwoods Brewing Company (Carson, Washington USA). In an effort to maintain social distancing protocols and safely serve pizza and beer, Backwoods asked customers to stay in their cars and enjoy a movie in their parking lot. Here's a comment from CAS Member Expert and Backwoods' CEO, Steve Waters:

“We had some rough days right after the shutdown was announced, and one of our crew thought up the idea to host a drive in movie. With all the bad news going on, it was a positive thing to focus on, and thankfully a new mission to work on while we were scrounging up emergency funding and doing all of the responsible things as well.

We hoped that it would push some extra to go business out of the pub on those nights, and honestly it’s been alright, but the best part has been giving our community something to enjoy, some form of togetherness while still being able to maintain their social distance.”

BAERLIC BREWING (PORTLAND, OR) OFFERS TOUCHLESS BEER BUYING

I have been very impressed with many of our CAS members and their responses to COVID-19. Leading the way is Portland, Oregon's Baerlic Brewing. They have implemented to-go beer sales and beer delivery, all while maintaining very strict social distancing standards. Check out these incredible entrepreneurs bringing smiles to their community each and every day!
FEATURED MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Professor Andre Sammartino
CAS Member Expert

University of Melbourne
My trip to Australia would not be possible without a lot of hard work from my friend and fellow beer scholar, Andre Sammartino. Andre and I met several years ago and in 2019 we finally found ways to work together and, most important, drink craft beer together. In 2019, we presented our research in Pilsen, Czechia at the Beeronomics Society Conference and also in Copenhagen at the Academy of International Business annual meeting. Now, in 2020 we will be meeting again in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia as we sample craft beers and interview scholars and business owners about their plans and hopes for the future.

CAS Members can find Andre's expertise all over our website in blog posts and forum comments. His work is also recognized in the 2017 Book: Economic Perspectives on Beer. Andre wrote the Australia Chapter: Craft Brewing in Australia, 1979 to 2015. Can't get enough? Check out his page on researchgate.net where he has over 40 research items and over 11,000 reads. Thank you, Andre for all you do for this community!
