Greetings!
MEET PETER PHILIP, FOUNDER WAYWARD BREWING (SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA)

MAY 2020 CAS MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Wayward Brewing Company was our first CAS member in Australia. Joining CAS in 2018, I finally got to visit Wayward and drink their delicious beers in February 2020. Since Wayward made the first bet on CAS, an additional ten Australian craft breweries, one Aussie distiller, and an equipment manufacturer have joined our global community. We are very grateful for Wayward Brewing joining our community and helping us build a growing group of Australian craft beer entrepreneurs. Today, I recognize Wayward's founder, Peter Philip as our May 2020 CAS Member of the month!

Peter Philip is an inspirational force for craft beer in Australia and beyond. In addition to founding Wayward (I particularly enjoyed their Balthazar barrel aged imperial stout!!), Pete is the founder of the Inner-West Brewery Association and Director of Australia's Independent Brewers Association. He helped organize CAS' first event down under, a MashUP of about 25 brewers, owners, marketers, and breweries in planning in February 2020. (Photo Credit: The Daily Telegraph)
CAS AWARDS ADDITIONAL PINK BOOTS SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP TO ALYSSA SHOEMAKER (PENNSYLVANIA, USA)

It is with great pride that I introduce our community to our newest Pink Boots Society Scholarship recipient, Alyssa Shoemaker. Alyssa is a highly trained pharmacist, brewer, and entrepreneur with ambitions to open her own nano brewery in Pennsylvania in the very near future. I asked Alyssa about her journey in beer and her answer tells me everything I need to know to understand her ambition and talent. I can't wait to try her beer!! Welcome to CAS, Alyssa! I dreamed up Alicorn Brewing Company in 2017, with the goal of opening a nanobrewery and taproom in Pennsylvania. My vision is to focus on beers and fermented products that appeal to the female craft beer consumer as well as the men! My background is in science, having earned my Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2012, and working as a Pharmacist since then. Being simply an enthusiastic home brewer and craft beer consumer, I recognized that I would need more experience and knowledge in brewing in order to make my dream a reality. I completed the Intensive Brewing Sciences and Engineering Program from American Brewers Guild in 2018. Since then, I've been working diligently on the Alicorn Brewing Company business plan, financing, and searching for a suitable location. In 2019, I also decided to further my education, earning a Certificate in Women's Entrepreneurship from Cornell University. In 2020, receiving a scholarship for Crafting a Strategy from the Pink Boots Society is a great opportunity for me to tie it all together and make a truly cohesive plan for a successful brewery. I am very grateful for the opportunity and look forward to joining the CAS community!

CAS MEMBER EXPERTS SHARE THEIR COVID-19 STRATEGIES, SUCCESSES AND FAILURES WITH MULTIPLE MEDIA OUTLETS

CAS Member, Ben Parsons (Baerlic Brewing Company) was featured in Jeff Alworth's Beervana Blog this week, sharing updates with how his move to canning and home delivery have helped keep the lights on during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Ben also shares candid thoughts about rehiring workers from unemployment and the difficulties of managing the PPP Loan Baerlic recently received.

Our member, Steve Waters was at it again this week. Steve (pictured in Zoom call above) was interviewed for about an hour on the Business Over Beer Podcast. Listen to Steve talk about strategies for surviving COVID as well as his decision to re-open his Portland, Oregon taproom in time for Cinco de Mayo. I can taste the Tequila Cutt aged IPA already!!

WHAT'S BREWING
IMPERIAL IPA AGED IN TEQUILA BARRELS - YES PLEASE!!

Beer lovers in the Pacific NW already know about the delicious collision of flavors present in Backwoods Brewing Company's Tequila Cutt Imperial IPA Aged in Tequila Barrels. I probably love this beer for its amazing label as much as I do its flavor. Clocking in around 10% ABV, the tequila barrels add in a tinge of sweetness to complement this imperial version of their flagship Logyard IPA. I am headed down today to buy a four-pack!!

FEATURED MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Pete Philip, Founder
Wayward Brewing Company
Sydney, Australia
As I approached the brewery in Sydney, Australia's Inner-West I immediately noticed the branded delivery trucks and open garage doors along the alley. It was a brew day and the smell of progress filled the air. Pete welcomed me with a firm handshake and a smile and we began an hour long conversation and tour of his award winning brewery. I met his staff and found a committed group of entrepreneurs who aim to build Australian craft beer at least as much as their own business.

Wayward Brewing Company and its founder epitomize the ambitions of Crafting A Strategy. In addition to working with Pete on exporting his beer to the USA, I watched as more than twenty friends/brewers packed Wayward that evening to discuss the future of craft in Australia. I could see the joy and reverence each had to be in Pete's place and share the beers they had brought from their own breweries. I can't wait until I can go back to hang with these amazing entrepreneurs. Cheers to Pete and Wayward Brewing!
