W4K Virtual Chapter Welcomed Dorothy Barnett, Climate + Energy Project, and a Presentation “Exploring the Clean Energy Future in Kansas and Beyond”

New attacks to clean energy’s future are happening almost daily, impacting the Kansas utility industry. Dorothy Barnett, Climate + Energy Project executive director, offered insights about what our shared clean energy future looks like under a Trump presidency and what Kansans can do to fight back.

Leading the effort to address the Heartland’s energy future, Barnett has coordinated winning campaigns to protect the Kansas Renewable Portfolio Standard from special interest groups attacks during four legislative sessions, allowing the wind industry to grow to 40% of the state’s power generation in just a decade.

W4K Lawrence/Douglas County Chapter Impact of Federal Cuts on Local Libraries and Museums, A Panel Discussion

The president's administration has targeted federal agencies directly responsible for supporting local libraries, museums, arts, and humanities for wholesale dismantlement, while canceling existing support previously committed to communities and, at least in some cases, illegally impounding funds. While court orders have paused some of these actions, harm is being felt nationwide.

Panelists: Steve Nowak, Executive Director of Watkins Museum of History; Saralyn Reece Hardy, Director of Spencer Museum of Art; Brad Allen, Executive Director Lawrence Public Library; Carol Smith, Dean of Libraries University of Kansas; Julie Mulvihill, Executive Director Humanities Kansas; and Ray Walling, State Librarian of Kansas.

Women for Kansas Great Bend Chapter Attend "Mapping the Gap" in Lucas, Kansas

Several members of the W4K Great Bend Chapter attended the "Mapping the Gap" art workshop sponsored by Alliance for a Healthy Kansas on July 29 in Lucas.

Alliance for a Healthy Kansas advocates for Medicaid expansion. Participants were encouraged to write a personal health journey story and then create an art piece based on that journey, using scraps of material and other objects. The project, held in several Kansas cities, was led by textile artist Malissa Long, who will stitch all of the art pieces together. Watch for a showing of the finished piece coming to a city near you.
