ATC Q2 Field Trip to TRACON
March 20th, 2024
The WAA sponsored a visit to NY TRACON on March 20, taking a group of our members and friends by bus from HPN to visit with and learn from LaGuardia Area controllers at the approach control facility. With snacks and drinks graciously provided for the bus trip by Million Air, we braved the late afternoon traffic and were welcomed to the facility by our host, Toby Bucsecu.
Toby and his fellow controller Brian Rabinowitz gave our group a conference room briefing on the construction of the NY Metro airspace, with flight paths for arrivals and departures at the 5 major airports that are all within a 17 nm circle (JFK/LGA/EWR/TEB/HPN). They answered our many questions about the airspace design and practical issues, providing great insights into how controllers operate.
And then it was time to break our group up into smaller sections with Toby conducting instruction sessions at a control position showing live traffic (he specifically chose a busy evening during the week so we could see a busy traffic time). We could see the high volume of traffic into and out of LGA and HPN, with altitude separation and delaying vectors for some traffic due to volume coming into LGA. Weather displays were demonstrated, and the display was configured so we could easily see the adjacent EWR/JFK/ISP/Liberty areas with tightly packed traffic being worked with near minimum separation among the airports. It was a highly interactive several hours that we spent at TRACON.
WAA expresses its great appreciation to Toby and Brian for their work in educating our tour participants.
