WAA Celebrates 40 Years!

The WAA had reason to celebrate on April 28...four decades of activism for the HPN flying community! Members and friends gathered in the Grand Lobby of Million Air White Plains for our 40th Anniversary Party.  With hors d'oeuvres in hand generously donated by Air Culinaire Worldwide, business owners, operators, pilots and supporters talked about the current trends at the airport and expressed gratitude to our organization for advocating for improved facilities, hosting safety events and offering opportunities to socialize with fellow aviators. 

Stephen Ferguson, aka "Fergie", was recognized for his successful career as Assistant Airport Manager, Westchester County Airport and was presented with the WAA Outstanding Service Award. His tenure began in 1989 when he joined as Operations Manager. Today, he works with many groups on the field and always helps where possible which explains the many friendships he has made.

The WAA was founded in 1982 by Berl Brechner, Executive Editor of Flying Magazine and Len Altizio, a private pilot, when it became clear that it would be advantageous for users and operators to have a collective voice in airport operations.  Education and communication were essential in addressing some of the aviation issues that were 'popping up on the radar.' As it turns out, these remain our guiding principles today and are particularly relevant in an industry experiencing growth and technological advances.

2022 WAA Bill Weaver Scholarship Program is Live!
The Westchester Aviation Association has partnered with Performance Flight and Academy of Aviation to award 2 aviation scholarships for flight training.

These scholarships will be awarded as a credit to be used at the flight schools located at Westchester County Airport and must be used within one year of receiving the awarded amount.

The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2022.

$6,000 Professional Pilot Career Award sponsored by Performance Flight
This award is for flight training for a licensed pilot working toward an advanced rating at Performance Flight at Westchester County Airport to include an Instrument rating, Commercial rating and/or Cirrus Transition Training.
$5,000 Introductory Flight Award sponsored by Academy of Aviation
This award is for introductory ground school and flight training at Academy of Aviation at Westchester County Airport.

Airport Bulletin #22-06 outlines the final construction phases to complete the Spent Aircraft Deicing Fluid Collection System Reconstruction Project.

Friends, family and community members are invited to attend Hudson Valley Honor Flight’s (HVHF) Mission 2,000 send-off ceremony at 6:30 am this Saturday May 21 at Million Air, Hangar M, 136 Tower Road, White Plains, NY.

This 26th flight, dubbed Mission 2,000 in honor of our 2,000th veteran, will depart from Westchester County Airport at 7:30 am and return at 8 pm. The public is also encouraged to attend the welcome home rally in the main terminal.

“Every flight is special, but this one is a major milestone. We are so proud to say that we have flown 2,000 veterans since our very first flight in 2012,” said HVHF Chairman Frank Kimler.
Westchester County to Hold Community Engagement Sessions in Advance of Airport Master Plan Update
The Westchester County Executive George Latimer has announced the introduction of a community engagement program to hear from the public on the future of Westchester County Airport. On the Horizon is the base to create the Airport’s Master Plan Supplement – essentially the framework for the future of the airport with respect to the physical condition of the Airport property, buildings and infrastructure, additional analysis of noise and environmental impacts and the local and regional economic impact of the airport. 

It is important that the county hears from all airport businesses, operators, users, community organizations, etc. with respect to how the airport can serve their needs.  We are urging WAA Members to attend at least one of these town halls to voice your usage, opinions, ideas or recommendations.
It is essential that the public be an integral part of this process moving forward and together, we will ensure the Airport evolves as a valuable transportation resource and a good neighbor to our residents.
