The World Affairs Council of Western Michigan will present its 2022 Vandenberg Prize to Ambassador (retired) Marie Yovanitch on Friday, June 24 at 12:00-1:30 PM ET, for her efforts to develop global understanding and collaboration on the world stage.

Amb. Yovanovitch's held a distinguished career in the U.S. Foreign Service included three postings as ambassador. President Barrack Obama appointed her Ambassador of the United States to Ukraine (2016-19), and President George W. Bush appointed her to be the top U.S. diplomat to Armenia (2008-11) and Kyrgyzstan (2005-2008). Her career is chronicled in her best-selling memoir, Lessons from the Edge.

WAC Western Michigan's 72nd Anniversary Event will also honor Bing Goei as the recipient of the 2022 Hillman-Orr Award.

The event begins at 12:00 PM ET with a luncheon at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. The program is hybrid and available for virtual registration through this Wednesday, June 22.

Join the conversation with author Jillian Haslam, as she speaks about her new book: A Voice Out of Poverty. Her story speaks to the intersection of poverty, race, and gender. Haslam is a renowned speaker and has appeared at countless prestigious organizations, including the University of Cambridge, Bank of America, Bank of England, PwC, and more.

Her memoir is a raw and inspiring tale recounting her childhood memories in the slums of Calcutta. Growing up in poverty, Haslam overcame disease, malnutrition, and tragedy. Despite the severity of her family’s living circumstances, she completed her education and landed her first major employment as a personal assistant to the CEO at Bank of America in India. Haslam rose through the ranks and is now dedicated to addressing the root causes of poverty through her work.
