Council of the Month: Los Angeles WAC & Town Hall
|
|
The
Los Angeles World Affairs Council & Town Hall (LAWACTH) is an organization that is not only seasoned with experience, but that has also embarked on an exciting new chapter. The Los Angeles World Affairs Council was founded in 1953 and Town Hall Los Angeles was founded in 1937. Both organizations have the unique capability to connect what's happening in Los Angeles, and internationally, to Angelenos as they welcome speakers from around the globe to discuss the day's most pressing topics.
Led by former Town Hall Los Angeles President,
Kim McCleary Blue, the staff is a small, but especially mighty one. LAWACTH produces nearly 100 events per year. With the staff holding key roles in event production, marketing, membership, and more, they are unified by their mission to inform, educate, and promote civic discussion on the most critical issues.

WACA's Wunderbar Together Grant Programs Ramp Up in October

Philip Yun Named World Affairs' President and CEO in San Francisco
|
|
Please join WACA in welcoming
World Affairs' (Northern California) new President and CEO
Philip Yun, who begins his tenure today,
October 7. Until recently, Yun was Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Ploughshares Fund. Prior to joining Ploughshares Fund, he was a vice president at The Asia Foundation (2005-2011). Yun will succeed
Jane Wales who stepped down after 21 years as CEO to join the Aspen Institute as Vice President.
“Philip’s appointment represents an exciting chapter in the life of World Affairs, and reflects its commitment to building dialogue and community across the various sectors – something that is key to our mission. Ours is an organization that began when the United Nations was born, right here in San Francisco, out of a hunger for public conversation about our role in the world."
“We owe a debt of gratitude to Jane Wales for having built our capacity, our reputation and our reach. She modernized our organization and energized our community, not only by attracting world leaders but also by drawing into our community Silicon Valley leaders who have been the architects of the information age. Most importantly, she established as its priority the effort to combat polarization and division with respectful conversations across difference.”
-- World Affairs' Chairman of the Board
Jonathan Visbal, who led the search in conjunction with the CEO Succession Committee.

"Thanks to WACA networking at its best and some quick work, the
World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts was able to host the European Union Ambassador to the U.S.
Stavros Lambrinidis at a small reception at the home of longtime member and friend of the Council Ambassador
Mark G. Hambley and his wife
Patricia on Thursday, October 3 with just two weeks' notice," writes
Cynthia Melcher, Executive Director of WAC Western Massachusetts. "This was the Ambassador's first outreach tour in New England since taking his position earlier this year."
Ambassador Lambrinidis was in Springfield, MA, where the Council is based, to meet with
Representative Richard E. Neal, Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee and also a strong supporter and member of the Council. Before heading East to Boston to meet with Massachusetts
Governor Charlie Baker, Amb. Lambrinidis spent two hours with Council members, board directors, and other guests. An alumnus of nearby Amherst College, the Ambassador spoke about the importance of balancing STEM education with liberal arts and the humanities to avoid "exporting cheap and shoddy values" as well as the need for the U.S. to remain a global leader in technology, especially related to combating climate change.
