Summer 2022 Newsletter

August is Traffic Awareness Month

Downtown_Douglass_Light_Trail_2016.jpg

National Traffic Awareness Month highlights traffic safety. Every day, pedestrians, drivers, and passengers fall victim to avoidable vehicle crashes. Such crashes can be extremely detrimental, both emotionally and physically, for the people involved. Moreover, loss of life or limb can put unnecessary economic burdens on families and individuals. The good news is that, with proper care and attention to traffic safety rules, such incidents can be prevented.

Together, we can bring positive changes to our lives and others.

Volunteers needed!

The results of WAMPO’s annual Bike/Ped count are used to identify and prioritize bicycle and pedestrian improvements based on existing conditions, existing plans, and the needs of bicycle riders and pedestrians. The Bike/Ped count occurs across the WAMPO region, currently at 38 locations.

Those that would like to volunteer can sign up by clicking or tapping the poster below.

WAMPO Planning Documents

Move Vision.png

What is an MTP?

The Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (WAMPO’s) long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), also known as REIMAGINED MOVE 2040, sets the vision and strategy for all regional transportation decision-making for the next 20 years.

Updated every five years, the plan includes a multimodal list of priority transportation projects and strategies that fit within the region’s anticipated funding capacity.

TIP.png

What is a TIP?

The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is a short-range program that identifies transportation projects to be implemented in the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WAMPO) region.

The TIP includes a list of priority projects to be implemented over a four-year period. It may include capital construction projects, like bridge repairs and replacements, road-preservation work, and construction of new bicycle facilities, as well as non-construction activities, such as purchasing replacement transit buses and technology projects.

The TIP illustrates how communities in our region are working together with the State of Kansas and WAMPO to invest federal, state, and local tax dollars in the transportation system. The projects implement WAMPO's long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan – REIMAGINED MOVE 2040 – which defines the vision and goals for the region’s transportation system.

The current TIP covers projects that are expected to be active during Federal Fiscal Years (FFYs) 2021 through 2024. The complete project list and additional project information can be found on WAMPO’s website.

MTP Administrative Modification & TIP Special Amendment #6.5

WAMPO staff are proposing an administrative modification to REIMAGINED MOVE 2040 to move up the time band on a project for the upcoming TIP Special Amendment 6.5. WAMPO staff can initiate administrative modifications. MTP administrative modifications need to be approved by the WAMPO Transportation Policy Body (TPB) but do not require public review and comment or a demonstration of fiscal constraints.

Regular opportunities are provided to project sponsors to request changes to the listed projects in WAMPO’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). WAMPO received a request from KDOT staff to amend the FFY2021-FFY2024 TIP earlier than the next scheduled amendment, so that certain projects may be accurately reflected in the TIP prior to their expected start dates. Other project sponsors were also given an opportunity to request that their projects be amended at the same time. The requested changes are proposed to be enacted through TIP Special Amendment #6.5 (in between the sixth and seventh regularly scheduled amendments), whose public comment period started on April 23rd and runs through May 22nd.

The MTP administrative modification and TIP Special Amendment #6.5 will be submitted for a recommendation at the May 23rd Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting, and be voted on at the June 14th TPB meeting.

MTP Amendment #2 & FFY 2023 - FFY 2026 TIP

A proposed amendment to REIMAGINED MOVE 2040, WAMPO’s long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), would adjust allowed funding amounts and time bands for projects to be implemented through the upcoming FFY2023-FFY2026 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) (successor to the FFY2021-FFY2024 TIP).

The public comment/approval schedule is for both
