The Alliance of Concerned Men is pleased to announce that Jovan Davis of ACM is graduating from the inaugural cohort of the University of Chicago Crime Lab’s Community Violence Intervention Leadership Academy (CVILA) on Friday, February 9th. Vice President Kamala Harris will host this historic graduation ceremony at The White House.

Jovan traveled from D.C. to Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles for his six-month CVILA training course. This honor makes clear to the whole community the leadership qualities that Jovan Davis has as an expert in the field of community violence intervention.

Jovan and 30 other leaders from 21 U.S. cities invested half a year in rigorous training, transforming a moment into a nationally-recognized movement in the community violence intervention sector. ACM extends our sincere congratulations to Jovan and deep thanks to all those at CVILA, the Harris School of Public Policy, and the UChicago Crime Lab who made this possible.

As we celebrate their achievements, we recognize that this is a historic occasion as the CVILA seeks to shape the future of violence reduction efforts across the country. We are excited to witness how Jovan and his fellow graduates will leverage the knowledge gained to improve public safety and reduce gun violence in their respective cities.

In addition to his work in Ward 8 for ACM, Jovan also helped found the Love More movement in 2015 to heal neighborhoods, interrupt violence, and help residents overcome obstacles. He felt it was important to not only offer job opportunities but also help community members learn how to become owners and operators of their own businesses.

A key component of this is commercial driver's license (CDL) training: for example, learning how to operate dump trucks and fork lifts. Some of the CDL students are part of the ACM Cure the Streets case load, and ACM paid for these individuals to participate in the CDL program. They are now motivated and believe a new way of life is possible for them, because they’ve seen others from their community transformed.

“Despite their ability to combat violence on a larger scale, professional CVIs too often aren't recognized as being impactful ... but that's the foundation of the work we're doing, paving the way with leaders like Jovan Davis, among the first to be recognized like this. He knows that violence is a problem and works to combat it with love, experience, and expertise, and wants to collaborate with public officials, local leadership, community organizations, and law enforcement to solidify this programming on a larger scale."
