WAVES Received a 3-Year Grant from Blue Cross NC Foundation

We are thrilled to announce that UCA WAVES has received a three-year, $655,000 grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation to help advance our efforts in supporting youth mental health.

This funding is part of a larger initiative by the Blue Cross NC Foundation, which has committed over $4.5 million in grants to support innovative approaches to youth mental health in North Carolina. With nearly half of high schoolers reporting feelings of hopelessness, it’s more important than ever to ensure our youth have the support they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

Our program will focus on providing Youth Mental Health First Aid, suicide prevention training, and outreach programs for youth, caregivers, and trusted adults. We’re committed to improving access to mental health resources, training youth service members and veterans, develop educational materials for youth storytelling, host youth mental health conferences, and promote AI-powered emotional support applications.

Thank you to the Blue Cross NC Foundation for their support, and we look forward to the impact this grant will have on our community!

Personal Experience with RTP Peer Support Group

Since early March, nearly ten members of the Chapel Hill Peer Support Group have walked together through six sessions—a journey of exploring intimate relationships. From the generational patterns and unspoken emotions between us and our parents, to the expectations and understanding shared with our children, and then to the beginnings of love and the joys and regrets within marriage, each conversation has been deeply moving.

Some shed tears while speaking of their fathers. Others saw, perhaps for the first time, how they appear in the eyes of their children. Still others were touched when revisiting the early days of their marriage, realizing: “We’ve truly been through so much—both warmth and pain.”

Each session has been an experience of deep self-awareness—marked by tears, reflection, and moments of rediscovering strength within our relationships.

This is an intimate and honest space—safe, open, and real. Here, we talk about family, love, and everything in between. In the next four sessions, we’ll continue exploring stories of marriage: what we’ve gained, what we long for, and the experiences and connections we hold within friendships and broader human relationships.

—— by Yiqi Zheng

Health Education Update: From Mental Health to Physical Wellness

Over the past two months, WAVES has been actively engaging with the local community in Cary and Morrisville, North Carolina. From February to March, we successfully hosted five mental health-related lectures, all of which were well-received and reflected our commitment to supporting emotional and psychological well-being.

As we move into April, we’ve expanded our focus to include physical health education. We’re excited to share that the first lecture in this new series was recently held, led by Anne, a business expert and dedicated WAVES volunteer.

The event was lively, engaging, and highly interactive. Community members participated enthusiastically, sharing their thoughts and questions around health and wellness. Anne guided the audience through a systematic and insightful discussion, covering essential topics such as:

 • Healthy lifestyle habits

 • Balanced nutrition

 • Chronic disease prevention and management

This session delivered practical, actionable tips and offered a clear, structured approach to improving physical health, empowering attendees to take proactive steps toward overall wellness.

A Training Session for MHFA Instructors

At WAVES, we are committed to high-quality training and fostering continuous growth. On March 15th, we had the honor of meeting with the national corporate well-being speaker and

consultant Ruby Brown-Herring, WAVES’ long-time partner and advisor.

This training session focused on how Mental Health First Aid instructors can be more effective and efficient in their training. Ruby shared practical strategies on maximizing training time, setting clear expectations, and using tools like the “parking lot” for questions that need more time. She also emphasized the importance of listening to participants and maintaining engagement while staying on track.

At the end of the session, Ruby also provided valuable advice for our Peer Support group, offering insights into the future of Peer Support Specialist Certification and resource management.
