Invited by UCA WAVES, Wake County Deputy Manager Duane Holder made a speech in Chinese at the 2024 Taste of China opening ceremony. Video recording and editing by HuaeLife editor Guangyong Mao

We were thrilled to participate in the 2024 Taste of China Festival, where we not only celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Chinese culture but also promote an essential cause: Mental Health Awareness. Food brings people together, and we believe it’s a perfect platform to start conversations about mental health. Through engaging activities and delicious dishes, we highlighted the importance of Mental Wellness and fostered a supportive community.

We enjoyed amazing food with all the participants, shared mental health resources, and discussed how we can support one another. Let’s break the stigma and create a space where everyone feels heard and valued. Together, we can make a difference!

WAVES at NAMI NC Annual Conference

The NAMI NC Annual conference was held in Greensboro, NC on 11/8-9 to celebrate its 40th anniversary! Lily Chen, the founding executive director of UCA WAVES along with Dr. Pao-hwa Lin, a Professor from Duke University Medical Center and one of the UCA WAVES Volunteer Researchers were invited to speak at one of the sessions.

In their presentation titled Breaking Silences in Mental Health in AAPI Communities, they shared the services and activities that they have dedicated to the AAPI communities, along with the key research findings from a study of mental health disparity among Asian Americans in the RTP area. The AAPI communities are underrepresented in both mental health services and research. The audience was very interested in the presentation and wanted to know more about the next steps that UCA WAVES will take. A representative from NAMI Wake County graciously offered to host a screening of our documentary-in-making (Silent War: Asian American Reckonings with Mental Health) in the future.

Apart from the presentation, UCA WAVES members took the chance to learn from other peer groups. Krystal Zhang, who is interested in expanding the youth peer support group in UCA WAVES, attended two talks on serving at-risk youth and building culturally responsive care respectively.

WAVES Serving Veterans

UCA WAVES always prioritizes serving our communities in need wherever they are and supporting veterans and active-duty service members, families, and children is no exception. Our volunteers, who are members of the active duty and veterans family, have provided vital resources and fostered a strong community network in Fayetteville, North Carolina—home to the largest U.S. Army base. The WAVES team is dedicated to helping veterans successfully transition to civilian life and supporting active-duty personnel throughout their military journey.

Our initiatives include a range of meaningful activities and events, such as:

1. Weekly delivery of homemade meals

2. Personalized birthday celebrations and party planning

3. Cultural events that bring the community together

4. Outdoor activities like picnics and soccer games

Looking ahead, we’re excited to expand our support by offering additional patches to military members next year, symbolizing our commitment to honoring their service. Through these projects and valued partnerships, UCA WAVES is building lasting impacts and ensuring those who serve our country feel recognized, cared for, and supported in every way possible.

Listen to a retired Marine Corps Pilot Garret Biss’s powerful Ted Talk.

“…His personal journey and the rawness with which he discusses the challenges of reintegration into civilian life shed light on a reality that is often overlooked: the profound sense of loss veterans experience when they leave the service..."

WAVES advocates for AAPI community by hosting a community conversation

On Nov 13, Lily Chen attended NC Wake County Community Health Needs Assessment Steering Committee Meeting to advocate for AAPI community. The right picture shows that Lily was with the other Wake County steering committee members at the event.

Asian Americans are very underreported

Only 2.3% AAPI community participated in the NC Wake County community survey despite making up 8.8% of the county population. UCA WAVES is hosting a community conversation with diverse Asian American community members who are working closely with the county survey team on Nov. 20.

A Heartwarming Event: Bridging Physical and Mental Health

On November 2, the Alliance of North American Chinese Physicians (ANACP), OllieTree Foundation, and RTP Chinese American Physician Association hosted a free clinic, opening its doors to individuals without insurance or for whom English is not a first language. The event provided not only essential medical services but also an unexpected and much-needed focus on mental health, making it a truly holistic health initiative.

During the event, UCA WAVES Executive Director Lily Chen and Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate Grace He delivered a powerful message on the importance of youth mental health. They passionately advocated for the destigmatization of mental health struggles, encouraging open conversations about psychological well-being.

Lily attended NC Wake County Behavioral Health Summit

On Nov. 6th, UCA WAVES executive director Lily Chen attended the Wake County Behavioral Health Summit. She said: "It was absolutely one of the most valuable conferences connecting with so many Wake County mental health stakeholders from my former clinical network to Wake County leadership, to much-needed experts from curriculum development to AAPI expertise. Local resources are critical in helping build our peer support program."

Updates on the Documentary Film Silent War

Supported by WAVES, Award-winning documentary filmmaker Professor Changfu Chang and his devoted team continued working on Silent War, a documentary shedding light on the mental health crisis in the Asian American community. The Silent War team traveled across the world in the past two years to film, giving Asian Americans a space to tell their stories.

Now Changfu and his team are wrapping up the production part of Silent War. Specifically, a couple of freelancers are hired to film (in some cases, re-shoot) additional short interviews and b-roll/footage; a music director is brought to the production and discussions on the music are ongoing; requests are being made for rights to music and archival materials, and the "final version" of the rough cut is being edited (before the film is sent to the editor at the production facility who will complete the final phases including color grading, audio sweetening, motion and graphics design).
