Dear WCA Community,
WCA staff have been working hard this summer to prepare for the upcoming year. One of the major undertakings this summer has been painting classrooms. WCA utilizes a painting plan where some of the building is painted each year. This year, we are adding accent walls to many of the elementary classrooms. I love the mountains added to Ms. Winning’s second-grade classroom.

Staff have also been digging holes for the installation of the new outdoor basketball hoops and outdoor court, paid for as part of our Ready, Set, Give 2021-2022 school year fundraiser and a grant for our Explorer’s Club. The gym ceiling has been repaired in the places it was falling down and the floors in the school are being waxed to ensure our building is looking its best when students arrive in the fall.
In addition, a teacher team of over 15 staff members has been meeting weekly to look at student engagement data from the spring and prepare initiatives focused on Belonging and Engagement for the fall. Much like progressions seen in Bloom's Taxonomy or Maslow's Hierarchy, there are levels to effective learning in schools:

When students are disconnected from the community, they are internally focused, have higher levels of anxiety, and do not learn effectively. In the 2022-2023 school year, we will undergo several initiatives to refocus students outside themselves and promote a sense of belonging. As a staff, we will also focus on student engagement in our instructional practices. When students are engaged, they care and want to take initiative and ultimately have ownership over learning.
- Research indicates a sense of belonging is positively associated with academic success and motivation (Freeman, Anderman and Jensen 2007).
- Students who feel they belong are more likely to see the value of required work and have higher self-belief in their chances to succeed in their courses (Verschelden 2017).
-
This article is a quick, simple, and timely read explaining the relationship between belonging and engagement: https://www.qualtrics.com/blog/belonging-at-work/ Although it does focus on the workplace, school is our student’s workplace; so we see many parallels.
We are excited to focus our efforts in this area this fall and to reap the benefits of growth both academically and in our community.
I hope your family is taking time this summer to enjoy time together. As we get close to the start of school please watch for these important communications:
- July 22 Newsletter- This newsletter will include important information about Open House, Express Check-in, and Starting the Year.
- July 22 Assignments for Staggered Kindergarten starting days are released.
- Between August 8-August 10- Look for an email from your student’s homeroom teacher welcoming them back to school. This is the notification of homeroom classroom assignments. Middle School students will be able to log in to Infinite Campus today to see their schedules.
I look forward to seeing you back in the building this fall!
