Dear World Compass Academy Community,
I have enjoyed seeing our students and staff showcase their talents at morning walk-up as part of our Ready, Set, Give fundraiser. Music brings people together, motives, inspires, and sparks imagination. Seeing our community come together with such a joyful musical celebration has truly been the highlight of my week. Thank you to Mr. Doeer, WCA music teacher, Ms. Sofia Montano, our fundraising committee lead, and the many staff, students, and parents who have supported this initiative.
If your family is able, we invite you to contribute to our Ready, Set, Give fundraiser. Funds will be used for staff appreciation, to improve the sounds system in our gymnasium, to purchase the much needed access points for our elementary school, and to begin the preliminary work to connect WCA property to the Plum Creek Trail. Together we can raise the note!
I am looking forward to seeing our community at our Bingo event tonight!

New Method to Track Volunteer Hours | |
We are excited to launch our new volunteer hours tracking system. Volunteers will now be able to log and track their time spent serving students and staff at World Compass Academy. Volunteers may log hours when they sign in at the front desk, at home, or on their mobile device. World Compass Academy values a strong Home/School connection and encourages all families to contribute 15 volunteer hours annually.
- Parent involvement in education is crucial. No matter their income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school.
-
(National Coalition for Parent Involvement in education. 2006. Research Review and Resources. Retrieved September 16, 2011, from www.ncpie.org/WhatsHappening/researchJanuary2006.cfm)
- Regardless of family income or background, students whose parents are involved in their schooling are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school.
- (Henderson, A.T., and K.L. Mapp. 2002. A New Wave of Evidence: The Impact of School, Family, and Community Connections on Student Achievement. National Center for Family and Community Connections with Schools, Southwest Educational Development Laboratory.)
- The most accurate predictors of student achievement in school are not family income or social status, but the extent to which the family creates a home environment that encourages learning, communicates high yet reasonable expectations for the child’s achievement, and becomes involved in the child’s education at school.
- (National PTA. 2000. Building Successful Partnerships: A Guide for Developing Parent and Family Involvement Programs. Bloomington, Indiana: National Education Service, 11–12.)
- When parents are involved at school, the performance of all the children at school, not just their own, tends to improve. The more comprehensive and well planned the partnership between school and home, the higher the student achievement.
- (Henderson, A.T., and Nancy Berla. 1995. A New Generation of Evidence: The Family Is Critical to Student Achievement. Washington, DC: Center for Law and Education, 14–16.)
Please see the instructions for accessing the new volunteer hours tracking system. Families who have already volunteered this school year are welcome to log hours back to August 1, 2022. We are excited to see adults in the building supporting our students.

The Bass/Abshire Family
Felicity Bass 1st Grade
FAMILY BACKGROUND
Our family of origin is the USA, but consists of a Cajun French culture. Our ancestors were French settlers in Acadia (Canada) in the late 1600s and early 1700s. After the French and Indian War, Cajuns were "deported" to the French Louisiana settlement so the British could use their land. Our family still lives in the same area to this date.
HOLIDAYS
Our family celebrates Mardi Gras. This is a particularly special cultural celebration for our family. Usually the party centers around good food since Lent begins the following day. Parades, beads, floats and loud zydeco music are all part of the celebration. We love celebrating with friends here in Colorado and share our traditions of luck and good fortune with King Cake, generosity and mask making for Mardi Gras.
TRADITIONS
Cajun French is a dying language because it was never written down. Similar to slang in English, Cajuns developed their own variety of French after being separated from Franchise for hundreds of years. Our food is particularly special, spicy and flavorful! Fête do-do (parties) and zydeco music are significant characteristics of Cajun culture as well. Most of Cajun culture and history is oral, and traditions like Pac at Easter, Mardi Gras, and stories of Petite Papa Noel are all handed down with elaborate storytelling. Our family was mostly farmers (sugarcane, rice, and crawfish) and our recipes for gumbo, bread, and beignets are used by everyone in our hometown. Our Aunt Joyce’s rolls are literally famous: her recipe is printed in the Bell City cookbook every year.
We are a loud, raucous bunch, but our music is full of joy to make you dance! Our grandfather was an accordion player for a zydeco band, and played on the radio often before he passed.
