Dear Friend,

In Worcester County, more than 13,000 children live below the poverty line, and in under- resourced neighborhoods that lack access to affordable housing, high quality childcare, health services, and opportunities for pathways to good jobs.
As a fourth generation resident of Worcester, I am happy to see that much of Central Massachusetts is experiencing resurgence. Finally, we can feel the reach of a booming economy. I am also proud to be leading Worcester Community Action Council as its new executive director. However, even with all the growth in our region, I would not be doing my job well if I did not also express my fear that too many individuals and families, including thousands of children, are still not within the grasp of our renaissance, and instead are living in or on the brink of poverty.
One in three children lives in poverty. That number escalates to one in two children when we factor families living at two times the federal poverty threshold, defined as "near poor". Yet, two-thirds of families in poverty include at least one working adult. These are our neighbors, our co-workers, perhaps members of your own family from Worcester to Webster who are left behind.
I am asking for your help. Your donation can help a span of needs such as: helping first time mothers learn to care for their newborn babies; providing youth and young adults employment training and access to education; helping children gain early literacy and development skills for lifelong learning and that also enable their parents to secure and keep employment; and, helping seniors, veterans, individuals with disabilities and others with limited income remain warm in their homes despite escalating utility costs.
Let's do more, together, and keep poverty issues at the forefront of community conversations. Please send in your donation today or donate online right now at through your credit card or PayPal.
