URGE GOV. EVERS TO SIGN PRO-LIFE BILLS

On June 5, the Wisconsin State Senate passed four pro-life bills and yesterday sent them to Governor Tony Evers. While the Governor has publicly stated that he will veto the bills, citizens are urged to contact him and to request his support. The four bills are the following:

Born Alive Survivors Protection Act.  AB-179  (Rep. Jim Steineke, R-Kaukauna) establishes a standard of required medical care for infants who survive an induced abortion. The bill also makes intentionally causing the death of a child born alive as a result of an abortion or an attempted abortion a felony with a penalty of life imprisonment, which is the same penalty as first-degree intentional homicide, but exempts the mother from prosecution.

Woman's Right to Know Act.  AB-180  (Rep. Robin Vos, R-Rochester) requires that a woman seeking an abortion via medication be informed that she may be able to continue her pregnancy if she seeks immediate medical assistance to counteract the effects of the first administration of the abortion drug. The bill also requires improved abortion reporting to the state.

Selective Abortions.  AB-182  (Rep. Barbara Dittrich, R-Oconomowoc) prohibits selective abortions, which are abortions that are sought solely because of the race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, or disability of the unborn child.

Medicaid Certification.  AB-183  (Rep. Dittrich) prohibits the state from certifying a private abortion services provider or affiliate under the Medicaid program, but provides an exemption for facilities that perform abortions in order to save the life of the mother, to prevent grave, long-lasting damage to her health, or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.

Please send Governor Evers a variation of the following message:

As Catholics we uphold the life and dignity of every human being. Whether she is facing an unplanned pregnancy or she is in the womb -- we care for both mother and child.

We believe that it is always wrong to alleviate human suffering by eliminating the weakest human being. That is why we also support numerous public policies that provide assistance to mothers, fathers, and children in need.

These bills provide certainty in Wisconsin that all human life will be protected and that women's health care is focused on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care--not the termination of life.  Women and children deserve better than abortion.
