Assembly Passes Concealed Carry in Worship Spaces
On January 20, the Assembly, on a voice vote, passed AB-597 (Pronschinske, Treig), which permits possession of a firearm by a licensee in a place of worship located on the grounds of a private school. The bill is now available for a floor vote in the Senate. The WCC testified in opposition.
Senate Passes Parental Choice Program Early Admission
On January 25, on a partisan vote of Ayes 21, Noes 12, the Senate passed SB-597 (Wanggaard, Van), which permits early admission to kindergarten and first grade at a private school participating in a Parental Choice Program. The bill awaits action in the Assembly. The WCC registered in support.
Senate Passes Clean Water Grants
On January 25, on a voice vote, the Senate passed an amended SB-678 (Cowles, Rob), which expands eligibility for nitrate-contaminated wells under the well compensation program and expands eligibility for watershed, lake, and river protection grants. The bill awaits action in the Assembly. The WCC registered in support.
WCC Supports Restrictions on Adult-Entertainment Venues
On January 26, the WCC registered in favor of AB-897 (Wichgers, Chuck), which seeks to prevent human trafficking from occurring in adult-entertainment establishments. The committee took no further action.
WCC Supports Removing EITC Marriage Penalty
On February 2, the WCC testified in support of AB-692 (Penterman, William), which allows certain married individuals to claim the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit). The committee took no further action.
WCC Supports Improvements to Workforce Housing
On February 3, the WCC registered in support of an amended SB-877 (Roth, Roger), which authorizes low-interest or no-interest loans for the rehabilitation of single-family homes built before 1980 to remove lead or improve the structures. The committee took no further action. The companion bill, AB-607 (Penterman), passed unanimously in the Assembly and now awaits action in the Senate.
WCC Opposes Terminating Parental Rights for Incarcerated
On February 3, the WCC registered against SB-595 (Stroebel, Duey), which creates a new ground for terminating parental rights based on the parent's incarceration. The committee took no further action.
WCC Opposes Showing Videos of Abortions
On February 3, the WCC registered against two abortion-related bills. SB-796 (Jacque, Andre) and companion AB-823 (Sortwell, Shae) require a school board that elects to provide an instructional program in human growth and development to present, when age appropriate, a state-approved animated video of part or all of an abortion procedure. SB-797 (Jacque) and companion AB-822 (Sortwell) require that women obtaining abortions be shown a state-approved video that depicts an animation or other illustration of the type of abortion procedure they will undergo.
