WCC Supports Abortion Prohibitions
On May 27, the WCC testified in support of two abortion bills. SB 260 (Jacque, Andre), prohibits the University of Wisconsin (UW) System or the UW Hospitals and Clinics Authority from allowing their employees to perform or assist in the performance of an elective abortion outside of a hospital setting. Currently, UW OB-GYN faculty and residents staff the Madison Planned Parenthood clinic. SB 261 (Jacque) requires the State to collect additional information about each abortion, including the visible sex and disability of the aborted child, as well as the facility where the abortion took place. The bill prevents identification of the mother or abortionist. The committee took no further action.
WCC Supports Male, Female, and Coed Athletics
On May 27, the WCC testified in support of two bills that regulate athletic competition based on the participant’s sex. SB 322 (Bernier, Kathy) and companion AB 196 (Dittrich, Barbara) require that public or private schools participating in a parental choice program that operate or sponsor an interscholastic, intramural, or club athletic team or sport place the team or sport into one of three categories: 1) participants who are males, men, or boys; 2) participants who are females, women, or girls; and 3) coed or participants of both sexes. The bills define “sex” as the sex assigned at birth by a physician. SB 323 (Bernier) and companion AB 195 (Dittrich) do the same for athletics at UW institutions and technical colleges. All the bills prohibit a male student from participating on an athletic team or in a sport designated for females, women, or girls. They also require the educational institution to notify students or parents if they intend to change a designation for an athletic team or sport. The committees took no further action.
