Register for April 21 Catholics at the Capitol
Registration is still open for the WCC’s free virtual advocacy day, Catholics at the Capitol, on April 21: www.wisconsincatholic.org/catholics-at-the-capitol. All registered participants will be provided with background information on the advocacy asks and instructions on arranging meetings with legislators. On April 21, a live virtual advocacy training and review will be held from 9 am to 9:50 am, which includes the opportunity for attendees to ask questions of WCC staff. Participants will then conduct meetings between 10 am and 4 pm with their elected officials to discuss several key issues that are currently being considered by the Legislature in the state’s biennial budget proposal. We hope you will join us!
WCC Supports Expungement Reform
On April 7, the WCC testified in support AB-069 (Steffen, David), which would give more individuals the opportunity to have their criminal records expunged. Currently, Wisconsin is one of only a few states that limits requests to expunge a criminal conviction to those aged 25 or younger and requires that such requests be made at the time of sentencing. The committee took no further action.
WCC Supports Law Enforcement Training and Recruitment Reform
On April 7, the WCC registered in support of AB-190 (Tusler, Ron), which makes certain changes to the responsibilities of the Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB)—the entity that regulates the training of law enforcement officers. The bill requires the LESB to also regulate jail and juvenile detention officer training standards, and to regulate recruitment standards for the recruiting of new law enforcement, jail, and juvenile detention officers. It requires each law enforcement agency to maintain an employment file for each employee and to make that file available to any law enforcement agency, jail, or juvenile detention facility when a former employee applies to one of these agencies and facilities for another job. The committee took no further action.
WCC Supports Efforts to Expand E-Cycling
On April 9, the WCC registered in support of SB-248 (Cowles, Robert), and companion AB-254 (Mursau, Jeff), which expand the state electronic waste recycling program, known as “E-Cycle Wisconsin," to include all public, tribal, private, and charter elementary or secondary schools.
