Staff Environmental Planner | Office Location: Denver, Colorado
This position is for an environmental planner who will support new and existing projects related to land and resource management planning, public and stakeholder engagement, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis based out of our Denver office. Primary duties will include project and meeting coordination, technical research and writing, field surveys and documentation, and writing/compiling plans and reports. Depending on experience, other duties could include literature research, socioeconomic data analysis, trail and recreation planning, resource management planning, meeting facilitation or other environmental planning and management services.
This position is intended to be based out of our Denver office. Variable time arrangements will be considered, hours will range from 24-40 hours per week. We are currently transitioning to a hybrid remote work model for most employees; and are open to a hybrid arrangement for this position.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, environmental planning, or a related field; or a combination of a biological science with commensurate experience and/or training in resource management, NEPA analysis, or other planning field
- Two years of professional experience in the field of land or resource management, public land planning, NEPA analysis, or environmental consulting
Performance Expectations and Responsibilities:
- Assist with preparing resource management plans, master plans, trail plans, and/or resource assessments for federal, state, and local land managers.
- Assist with preparing technical reports and resource sections for NEPA documents (EA and EIS).
- Comfortably interact with clients, stakeholders, and members of the public to assist with complex and sometimes controversial planning processes and decisions.
- Conduct and synthesize background research and technical data for documents, plans and reports.
- Occasional travel throughout Colorado and the western U.S. for projects.
- Periodically work variable hours, including evening meetings, long days, and occasional weekends.
- Effectively communicate with GIS staff to coordinate maps and graphics.
- Meet deadlines and hours per task targets as required by project budgets.
Skills and Abilities:
- Training in environmental planning, environmental policy, stakeholder engagement and/or ecology.
- Demonstrated interest and appropriate knowledge in public land management, resource stewardship, outdoor recreation management, and/or environmental impact analysis.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal land management agencies and a desire to learn.
- Familiarity with biological and cultural resources in Colorado and a desire to learn.
- Physical stamina to perform occasional fieldwork, carry a minimum of 25 pounds, hike more than 3 miles in a day over rough terrain, and work in adverse weather conditions.
- Professionalism, integrity, and comfort working with people are of the utmost importance as the position requires regular contact with clients, Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products and Adobe Acrobat.
- Familiarity with ArcGIS, Google Earth, and other mapping platforms.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with project teams and outside stakeholders, both in writing and verbally.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and solution-oriented thinker with a strong work ethic.
- Proven ability to handle multiple priorities and be self-directed.
- Ability to collaborate with field teams and cross-functional teams throughout the company.
- Previous experience working for a land management agency or environmental consulting firm is a plus, but not a requirement.
