Medicine: Rural Point of View
A new project for medical students was launched this past year which is designed to increase the awareness and interest of medical students to consider training and then practicing rural medicine.
Medicine: Rural Point of View showcases not only unique medical cases seen in rural clinics/hospitals, but also broader health disparities topics such as COVID-19, opioids, mental health, obesity, transportation, food deserts, advocacy, etc. One twist of this project is that in addition to community preceptors, we asked residents of both rural training track/pathways programs and urban residencies of the Family Medicine, Psychiatry, General Surgery, and OB/Gyn specialties to be presenters and to apply their topic with a rural point of view. Five one-hour virtual presentations were scheduled for the 20/21 academic year over the lunch hour which are listed below. While residents benefit by gaining teaching experience and scholarly activity, medical students receive the benefits of guidance and opinions from residents as well as learning first-hand about rural medicine.

Planning will start soon for the upcoming academic year. If you are interest in presenting or if you know a rural preceptor or resident who would inspire medical students to pursue rural training with a presentation, please contact Jennifer Crubel at [email protected].

Professional Development Funds Available
WCRGME, in partnership with WRPRAP, is pleased to announce there is funding available for Professional Development activities designed to prepare our partner Rural and Community Primary Care physicians, staff, coordinators, and facilities for success in training future medical providers. Examples of activities eligible for funding include:

  • Attendance at professional meetings/conferences
  • Professional webinars
  • Customizable professional development activities to meet the needs of your facility. (If your facility is interested in a 1-2 hour training to be held at on-site at your location, the grant can help cover facilitation and coordination of the event.)

To be eligible for funding, your program must be a recipient of WRPRAP funds (either Organizational or Transitional). Please see our website for more information. You’ll see there is a lot of flexibility for what these funds will cover and the application process is very simple!
WCRGME News
WCRGME Video Production Project
The WCRGME video production project is continuing into 2021. Last year, WCRGME visited the rural residency programs in Baraboo, Elkhorn, Monroe and the Amery/New Richmond areas to create the promotional videos that we have available to view on the WCRGME YouTube channel. This year, we will complete the video production program by creating additional promotional videos for each of the rural WI fellowship programs in Monroe, Walworth, Rice Lake and Rhinelander. WCRGME and Spoken Frame Media visited Monroe Clinic in February to gather the remaining footage needed to create their fellowship program video. We will be moving on to Rice Lake and Walworth this spring. Stay tuned to the WCRGME social media pages for more behind-the-scene moments from production.
WCMEW Launches Clinical Training Hub Webpage
WCMEW has a new page on its website. The Clinical Training Hub was created to provide information about available health care education and training programs and sites where students can fulfill their clinical training experiences.

Medical, nursing, physician assistant, and pharmacy schools offer the classroom curricula that provide the foundation for student learning; and health care organizations – hospitals, clinics, and health systems – provide the facilities and teachers that give the opportunities for students to have their patient care training experiences (clinical sites).
