WCUW Remembers
Fran Ritchie (1962-2026)

This month, the "on-air" light dimmed for longtime friend and respected music historian Fran Ritchie. On Saturday nights, he brought us all together as the host of the Rock and Roll Party on 91.3 FM. And every October, WCUW listeners looked forward to his deep dives into spooky niche classics, like The Ticklers’ 'Millie the Ghoul,' all drawn from his own incredible record collection. He’ll be deeply missed by the community he helped soundtrack.

WCUW programmer John McKeag has fond memories, saying, "Fran started inviting me to some great shows that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. He'd always kindly offer to drive. My favorite show he took us to were The Zombies reunion in 1999 up in New York. His natural selflessness is what really stands out to me (and others) about him."

Fran’s encyclopedic memory was legendary—spanning performers, recordings, and eras. Running into him at an event often led to an impromptu trip down memory lane, swapping stories of performances past and present. "About a month and a half ago, he stopped down to see the show in the Frontroom while I was on the air (doing his old show)," added McKeag. "He came in to say hello, and we chatted for about two hours. I'm so very grateful that happened."

With a welcoming smile and a kind word, Fran was a friend to many throughout the Worcester scene. We thank him for his years of dedicated programming and support of local music.

Friday, March 27, thru Sunday, March 29: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Natchez”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Natchez”, a film by Suzannah Herbert.

Natchez captures an unsettling clash between history and memory in a small Mississippi town; a layered mosaic of people contending with the weight of the past in a place where it is always present.

Equal parts amusing and disturbing, we journey through an antebellum tourist destination at a crossroads as it grapples with a deeply troubled history that is so thoroughly ingrained in its present, we’re left to wonder if it’s actually past at all.

Tribeca Film Festival 2025 Winner: Best Documentary Feature; Special Jury Mention: Cinematography in a Documentary Feature; and Special Jury Mention: Editing in a Documentary Feature.

“The question of how we see our history and who gets to decide is powerfully presented, with respect and insight, in the documentary “Natchez.” It is about the personal, cultural, and commercial pressures in a small Mississippi town where the economy depends on a sanitized version of the era of wealthy plantation owners who used enslaved people to pick cotton, a version that is increasingly more difficult to maintain as residents and paying visitors want a more honest story.” – Nell Minow, RogerEbert.com

Run time is 1 hour 26 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Friday, March 27, 7 pm; Saturday March 28, 1 pm; and Sunday, March 29, 1 pm.

Purchase tickets online: . $14.64 general admission, $12.51 senior/student with ID, $11.44 for WCUW members (processing fees included).

Saturday, March 28: Muck and the Mires, with Muddy Ruckus opening, at the Frontroom

This is a very rare area appearance of Muck and the Mires! Catch them right here in Worcester before they head back to Europe.

Boston’s Muck and the Mires have been described by legendary Runaways producer Kim Fowley as “a mix of the 1964 Beatles and The Ramones.” Fowley went on to produce several of the band’s releases, helping shape their signature blend of British Invasion meets high-energy punk.

The group first gained international attention when Little Steven Van Zandt crowned them the #1 Garage Rock Band in the US during his MTV Battle of the Bands. Since then, Muck and The Mires have taken their electrifying live show around the globe, with performances across the US, UK, EU, South America, Canada, Mexico, and Japan.

They’ve shared the stage with some of rock’s most iconic names, including The Sonics, The New York Dolls, Ray Davies (The Kinks), The Flamin’ Groovies, The Stooges, and even a Beatle—Pete Best.

Muck and the Mires are Muck (formerly of The Voodoo Dolls and The Queers) on vocals and guitar, Jessie Best on drums, Pedro Mire (ex–The Apehangers) on lead guitar, and bassist John Quincy Mire.

When not touring, the band continues to rack up airplay around the world. They’ve been featured multiple times on SIRIUS XM’s Underground Garage, where they’ve twice earned the coveted title of “Coolest Song in the World”—first with “I’m Your Man” and most recently with “Beat Revolution,” the title track from their seventh full-length album.

Special guest Muddy Ruckus open the show! They are an American rock duo known for their raw blend of punk blues, Americana grit, and psychedelic rock energy. With Erika Stahl on suitcase-kick drums and Ryan Flaherty running guitar through multiple amps for a full-band sound, the duo creates explosive live performances that feel larger than life. Their music has been praised for its darkly poetic lyrics, swampy grooves, and high-voltage stage presence — earning them festival slots, national tours, and a devoted underground following.

Showtime: Saturday, March 28, 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets $20 cash or Venmo at the door.

Light refreshments will be served. Or, visit Fantastic Pizza/Grub Guru next door for pizza, Indian food, and more, to eat-in or to bring back.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
