Thursday, April 9, thru Friday, April 10: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Two Prosecutors”
Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Two Prosecutors”, a film by Sergei Loznitsa.
The latest film from the great Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa (My Joy) is a scalpel-precise tale of the horrors of totalitarian bureaucracy.
Adapting a novel by Soviet writer and political prisoner Georgy Demidov, set in the Soviet Union in 1937, Loznitsa follows the attempts of an idealistic government-appointed prosecutor (Alexander Kuznetsov) to expose the mistreatment of a dissident Bolshevik writer who has been jailed and tortured without evidence of wrongdoing.
As he gradually comes to realize, the lack of cause for the man’s imprisonment is hardly unique under Stalin’s regime, and the neophyte lawyer may be putting himself in danger by exposing his own moral righteousness.
Loznitsa constructs his story with a patient yet unmistakable sense of mounting dread, focusing on the devastating minutiae that allows fascism to function in our world.
“Drawn from a suppressed story by gulag survivor Georgy Demidov, Sergei Loznitsa’s haunting film unravels a terrifying parable of bureaucratic evil.” – The Guardian
“4 stars.” – Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com
Run time is 1 hour 57 minutes. NR.
Showtimes: Thursday, April 9, 7 pm; and Friday, April 10, 7 pm.
Purchase tickets online: $14.64 general admission, $12.51 senior/student with ID, $11.44 for WCUW members (processing fees included).

Sunday, April 12: Cheryl Arena and Mike DiBari & the Band at the Frontroom
Cheryl Arena and Mike DiBari & the Band come to the Frontroom. Cheryl, on harmonica and vocals, is joined by Mike DiBari on guitar and vocals, Ted Bukowski on bass, and Forrest Padget on drums. Brought to you by Record Shop Lady Phyllis!
One of only 30 artists featured in the book “Masters of the Harmonica,” Cheryl Arena brings the sound of authentic American blues music to audiences in the US and Europe. She plays everything from the urban electric blues of Chicago to the soulful Delta sounds of the Deep South — and everything in between.
Cheryl has shared the stage with such luminaries as James Cotton, Junior Wells, Charlie Musselwhite, Pinetop Perkins, Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson, Lazy Lester, R.L. Burnside, among many others.
Jazz/Blues guitarist Mike DiBari is inspired by B.B. King and Freddie King, among others. He performs with many local and national blues and R&B artists including Mud Morganfield (Son of Muddy Waters) and Boston’s own Toni Lynn Washington.
Showtime: Sunday, April 12, 5 pm. Doors open at 4:30. $15 cash or Venmo at the door.
Light refreshments will be served. Or, visit Fantastic Pizza/Grub Guru next door for pizza, Indian food, and more, to eat-in or to bring back.
The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
