April is Scottish-American Heritage Month!

April is Scottish-American Heritage Month- come celebrate it with us at WCUW, with the longest-running Scottish radio program.

Tune in to John Hamilton’s program “The Sounds of Scotia”, Saturdays, from 12 noon to 2 pm, on WCUW 91.3, or online at wcuw.org.

Thursday, April 23, thru Friday, April 24: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie”, a film by Matthew Johnson .

Based on the epic Canadian TV series, “Nirvanna the Band the Show”, lifelong friends Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol are back to continue their quest of booking a gig at the Rivoli.

We follow Matt and Jay guerrilla-style as they interact with everyone from unsuspecting hardware store employees (one reacts to their plan with a libertarian’s sense of freedom, mixed with humanist caution) to CN Tower security who think nothing of the parachutes on their backs and pliers on their person. “They’re for cutting pants.”

But then their plan to book a show at the Rivoli goes horribly wrong, and Matt and Jay accidentally travel back to the year 2008.

“It’s a movie like this that proves that cinema still has the capacity to surprise, even in criminally goofy comedies like this.” – Clint Worthington, RogerEbert.com

“Shambling and sweet, loaded with hilarious standalone bits that are held together by the duo’s warm camaraderie and intimate connection to the city of Toronto.” – Scott Tobias, The Reveal

Run time is 1 hour 39 minutes. R (language | brief violence).

Showtimes: Thursday, April 23, 7 pm; and Friday, April 24, 7 pm.

Purchase tickets online: $14.64 general admission, $12.51 senior/student with ID, $11.44 for WCUW members (processing fees included).

Tickets at the door: $12 general admission, $10 senior/student with ID, $9 for WCUW members.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

AMERICAN ROUTES airs Thursdays 7 PM to 9 PM

Compared to What?

We asked our listeners to help pick music and musicians that deal with the troubles we’re facing, and we added a few songs and singers that fit the mood as best we could, including the Staple Singers, Allen Toussaint, Woody Guthrie, Toots and the Maytals, Son Volt, Carole King, John Coltrane, Los Super Seven, Dr. John, and Tom Waits. So we’re just trying to make it real, and the big question remains: Compared to What?

Radio Waves: WCUW Makes Some Key Leadership Changes as Station Changes

Christine Hochkeppel/Telegram & Gazette File Photo

(from Worcester Magazine, Jan 14, 2026)

There have been some key staff changes behind the dial at WCUW Community Radio 91.3 FM as 2026 gets underway, including longtime executive director Troy Tyree transitioning to a new role as part-time programming director for the radio station.

“Troy has given his heart and soul to WCUW for more than 15 years as its only paid staff member,” WCUW said in a statement to the Telegram & Gazette.

Now there are three paid part-time staff. Joining Tyree are Steve Blake, who has volunteered at WCUW for many years, as general manager, and Laura Lenis as WCUW’s membership consultant.

Scott Hayman, clerk of the WCUW board of directors, said “the board credits Troy with shepherding WCUW through many of its lean times, especially COVID, and for his vision for the now very successful FrontRoom, a venue for weekly live music and Cinema Worcester … while managing all the station’s broadcasting and administration, Troy worked tirelessly to keep the 910 Main Street facility in shape on a shoestring budget.”
