ART in the WCUW Harold Stevens Gallery

Now through Saturday, August 29: Creativity Over Silence

The Harold Stevens Gallery presents “Creativity Over Silence”, curated by Cate Smith and Allissa Williams.

The Harold Stevens Gallery presents “Creativity Over Silence”, curated by Cate Smith and Allissa Williams.

The exhibition asks artists to respond to the events of the last year and a half through their own artistic vision. Photographers, sculptors, ceramic artists, painters, video artists, and mixed media artists are coming together to address their reactions to our confusing and often angering times. Artists have the capacity to generate new ideas, illuminate where differences and joint passions lie, and reveal truths ignored by mainstream media. By bringing together these artists and their works, the show seeks to open up a dialogue between artists and between artists and their audiences.

Participating artists: Frank Armstrong, Bayda Asbridge, Heather Barros, Ricardo Barros, Lisa Barthelson, Scott Boilard, Jennifer Carey, Trish Dehls, Louie Despres, Alice Dillion, Stephen DiRado, Skye Donaldson, Claudio Eshun, Antonio Fonseca, Frances Jakubek, Patti Kelly, James Maurelle, Victor Pacheco, Toby Sisson, Sandrine Sheon, Hoang Truong, Jill Watts, Allissa Williams, Matt Wright, Liang Yuan.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 11 am to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 4 pm; Saturdays 8:30 am to 12:30 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

A talk on Saturday, July 25, 10:30 am to 12 pm, will bring together artists Bayda Asbridge, Jennifer Carey, Hoang Truong, and Liang Yuan to talk about their personal experiences with oppression and privilege, followed by questions from the audience and a discussion.

The Gallery is accepting donations for Food Not Bombs Worcester of toothbrushes, toothpaste, travel soap/shampoo, baby wipes, granola/protein bars, and gloves.

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Friday, August 21: Cinema Worcester at the FrontRoom Presents “The Last Picture Shows”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW FrontRoom presents “The Last Picture Shows”, a film by Rustin Thompson.

On the trip, he finds long abandoned and forgotten cinemas; movie houses that have fallen into disrepair; theaters recently closed, theaters struggling to hold on, and theaters that—thanks to their thoughtful caretakers—are not only surviving but thriving.

“There’s passion and hope here alongside the grimness.” – The Spool

Run time is 1 hour and 18 minutes. NR.

Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Wild Inside”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Wild Inside”, a film by Penny Lane.

On February 2, 2023, Flaco—a male Eurasian eagle-owl, the largest species of owl in the world—was discovered missing from his cage at the Central Park Zoo in Manhattan.

Flaco overcomes his years of captivity and lack of survival skills to answer the call of the wild—and discovers he was wild inside all along.

What follows is a surprising story revealing the delight, concern, and fascination of millions in the city and beyond.

“Lane, as in all her films, refuses the straightforward path. She asks much more of her audience than just one reaction, to the great benefit of her movie and to the enduring honor of Flaco.” – Hammer to Nail

Run time is 1 hour and 36 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Saturday, August 22, 1 pm, and Sunday, August 23, 1 pm.

What is the FrontRoom?

The WCUW FrontRoom is a community-run performance venue and event space located inside the WCUW 91.3 FM radio station at 910 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is designed as an intimate, “living room” style space for local arts and community gatherings of up to 75 people.

Here is what makes it unique:

1. A hub for independent cinema

The FrontRoom serves as the screening room for Cinema Worcester. It functions as a cozy micro-cinema showing:

• Independent and foreign films.

• Documentaries and cult classics.

• The annual Oscar-nominated shorts.

2. Live performances and events

Beyond movies, the space is a versatile community cultural center. It regularly hosts:

• Live music: Acoustic sets, jazz, blues, and more.

• Art display: The walls of the FrontRoom feature Rose LeBeau’s rock icon paintings from an exhibit that was held in the station’s Harold Stevens Gallery.

3. Community “Living Room”

True to its community radio roots, the FrontRoom is available for private rentals and public use.

WCUW promotes it as a space for:

• Birthday parties, celebrations of life, and fundraisers.

• All-ages events and neighborhood meetings.

• Collaborative projects with local NGOs and artists.

Sunday, August 23: Jubilee Gardens at the FrontRoom, with Gang of 3 Opening

Jubilee Gardens returns to the FrontRoom after a long time-out for a special fundraiser to benefit WCUW. Opening for them is Gang of 3.

Come hear original world, folk, and pop rock songs, all written by Jubilee Connolly.

So far the line up is Jubilee Connolly, Dan Hunt on guitar, Paul Provost on keys, Ed Melikian on oud, Rainer Reichel on violin, Tomoka Howard on harp, Lui Fraire and Dave Hartwell on percussion and Gail Hunt on bass. There are other band members that we hope will join in- more details as the date draws closer.

The opening act will be the amazing Gang of 3 trio, with exceptional vocalist John Solaperto, Evan Harriman on keyboard, and Dan Hunt on guitar.

This will be a night of fun and great music! Come down to help support community radio and have some fun with Jubilee Gardens! Parking across the street, you’re sure to see some friends or make some new ones, listening, dancing and refreshments.

Scott McLennan comments: “Connolly’s music is a kaleidoscope of sounds, pulling Latin American rhythms, the hypnotic grooves of raga music, and the mysterious airs of Arabic music under the umbrella of sophisticated arrangements that fuse jazz, pop and folk elements.”

Showtime: Sunday, August 23, 6:00 pm. Doors open at 5:00. Suggested minimum donation $20 cash or Venmo. Light refreshments will be served.

The WCUW FrontRoom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
