Now thru Saturday, Aug. 29: Creativity Over Silence
The Harold Stevens Gallery presents “Creativity Over Silence”, curated by Cate Smith and Allissa Williams.
The exhibition asks artists to respond to the events of the last year and a half through their own artistic vision. Photographers, sculptors, ceramic artists, painters, video artists, and mixed media artists are coming together to address their reactions to our confusing and often angering times. Artists have the capacity to generate new ideas, illuminate where differences and joint passions lie, and reveal truths ignored by mainstream media. By bringing together these artists and their works, the show seeks to open up a dialogue between artists and between artists and their audiences.
Participating artists: Frank Armstrong, Bayda Asbridge, Heather Barros, Ricardo Barros, Lisa Barthelson, Scott Boilard, Jennifer Carey, Trish Dehls, Louie Despres, Alice Dillion, Stephen DiRado, Skye Donaldson, Claudio Eshun, Antonio Fonseca, Frances Jakubek, Patti Kelly, James Maurelle, Victor Pacheco, Toby Sisson, Sandrine Sheon, Hoang Truong, Jill Watts, Allissa Williams, Matt Wright, Liang Yuan.
Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 11 am to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 4 pm; Saturdays 8:30 am to 12:30 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!
A talk on Saturday, July 25, 10:30 am to 12 pm, will bring together artists Bayda Asbridge, Jennifer Carey, Hoang Truong, and Liang Yuan to talk about their personal experiences with oppression and privilege, followed by questions from the audience and a discussion.
The Gallery is accepting donations for Food Not Bombs Worcester of toothbrushes, toothpaste, travel soap/shampoo, baby wipes, granola/protein bars, and gloves.
The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Thursday, July 30: Cinema Worcester at the FrontRoom Presents “Don’t Look Back”
Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW FrontRoom presents “Don’t Look Back”, a film by D. A. Pennebaker.
Join us for a trip to the late 60s with three fantastic musical films, beginning with Don’t Look Back.
In 1965, the iconic troubadour Bob Dylan toured the United Kingdom at the age of 23, and director D.A. Pennebaker was allowed behind the scenes to provide one of the most intimate glimpses of the private and frequently cantankerous songwriter.
The film chronicles Dylan’s concert appearances, hotel room conversations, and transportation downtime, pulling back the curtain on the folk messiah at the end of his relationship with Joan Baez and on the cusp of his creative shift toward rock music.
Run time is 1 hour and 36 minutes. NR.
Showtime: Thursday, July 30, 7 pm.
Save money with a pass for all three films in this series: Purchase your three-film pass, available online only: $23.18 general admission (processing fees included).
Purchase individual tickets online: $10.38 general admission (processing fees included).
Tickets at the door: $8 general admission (single tickets only).
The WCUW FrontRoom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Friday, July 31: Cinema Worcester at the FrontRoom Presents “Monterey Pop”
Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW FrontRoom presents “Monterey Pop”, a film by D. A. Pennebaker.
Our trip to the late 60s continues with the second of three fantastic musical films: Monterey Pop.
Featuring performances by popular artists of the 1960s, this concert film highlights the music of the 1967 California festival.
Although not all musicians who performed at the Monterey Pop Festival are on film, some of the notable acts include the Mamas and the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, the Who, Otis Redding, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Hendrix’s post-performance antics–lighting a guitar on fire, breaking it and tossing a part into the audience—are captured.
Run time is 1 hour and 19 minutes. NR.
Showtime: Friday, July 31, 7 pm.
Save money with a pass for all three films in this series: Purchase your three-film pass, available online only: $23.18 general admission (processing fees included).

Saturday, August 1: Lisa Marie & Johnny Juxo featuring The Hip-Shakin’ Horns at the FrontRoom
Lisa Marie & Johnny Juxo return to the FrontRoom!
We are so excited to have this duo back! Their last show with us was truly a night of musical magic!
Lisa Marie is not only a blues shouter in the tradition of Big Joe Turner and Wynonie Harris, this Boston native carries on the sweet gospel soul of Sam Cooke, the yearning of Hank Williams, and the boisterous, cartoonish fun of Louis Jordan. From jump-swing to swamp boogie, country blues to funky New Orleans grooves, her deep husky vocals express an unmistakable joy.
Lisa Marie tells her audience that “joy and sorrow are two sides of the same coin.” This woman is a storyteller, with a gift that allows you to fall deeply in love with a song – sometimes one you may have heard before, but never have you heard it done quite like this… Innovative, creative vocal and musical arrangements that put a new twist on every story.
Combine the magnetic forces of Lisa Marie on vocals and percussion; Johnny Juxo on keys and vocals; truly energetic performances and the songwriting skills of two of New England’s premier musicians – and you’ve got one helluva party- Roots, rock ‘n’ roll & boogie woogie soul!
Showtime: Saturday, August 1, 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets $20 cash at the door. Light refreshments will be served.
The WCUW FrontRoom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW FrontRoom presents “Gimme Shelter”, a film by Charlotte Zwerin, Albert Maysles, and David Maysles.
Our trip to the late 60s concludes with Gimme Shelter.
Theis is the landmark documentary about the tragically ill-fated Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont Speedway on December 6, 1969.
Only four months earlier, Woodstock defined the Love Generation; now it lay in ruins on a desolate racetrack six miles outside of San Francisco.
Run time is 1 hour and 31 minutes. R (language | brief nudity | graphic violence).
Showtime: Saturday, August 1, 1 pm.

What is the FrontRoom?
The WCUW FrontRoom is a community-run performance venue and event space located inside the WCUW 91.3 FM radio station at 910 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is designed as an intimate, “living room” style space for local arts and community gatherings of up to 75 people.
Here is what makes it unique:
1. A hub for independent cinema
The FrontRoom serves as the screening room for Cinema Worcester. It functions as a cozy micro-cinema showing:
• Independent and foreign films.
• Documentaries and cult classics.
• The annual Oscar-nominated shorts.
2. Live performances and events
Beyond movies, the space is a versatile community cultural center. It regularly hosts:
• Live music: Acoustic sets, jazz, blues, and more.
• Art display: The walls of the FrontRoom feature Rose LeBeau’s rock icon paintings from an exhibit that was held in the station’s Harold Stevens Gallery.
3. Community “Living Room”
True to its community radio roots, the FrontRoom is available for private rentals and public use. WCUW promotes it as a space for:
• Birthday parties, celebrations of life, and fundraisers.
• All-ages events and neighborhood meetings.
• Collaborative projects with local NGOs and artists.

Food, Art, & more...
SUNDAY FUNDAY
11 AM - 2PM • 3 Brussels St, Worcester
June 7 - October 25
Brussels St Market is a weekly outdoor market with a mix of food, art, and local vendors.
There’s always something good to eat, a handful of new things to check out, and a reason to stick around a little longer than you planned. Some vendors are there every week; others rotate through, so it never feels exactly the same.
You can stop by quick or hang out for a while. Either way, it’s a solid way to spend part of your Sunday.

Saturday, August 8: “Who Wants To Know” at the FrontRoom, with Rick Porter Opening
“Who Wants To Know” comes to the FrontRoom for a special fundraiser to benefit WCUW. Opening for them is Ric Porter.
Who Wants to Know delivers a joyful mixed-up gumbo of R&B, Americana, Country, and Blues. The “who” in Who Wants to Know is Arny Spielberg (guitar/vocals), Bob Sarkala (guitar), Gerry Bellegarde (bass/vocals), and Doug MacLeod (drums).
This flexible confederation of old friends and talented musicians spans decades of the Massachusetts music scene, with memorable collaborations in every genre and type of venue—from the 70s punk clubs of Cambridge, to show bands, to award-winning blues ensembles, to singer-songwriter showcases. Some members have played together steadily for more than two decades; others lost touch, then happily reconnected through crazy turns of kismet.
The opening act will be Ric Porter. Ric has been a rock-steady presence in the Central Mass music scene for nearly 50 years. From The Preston-Porter Band, as a founding member of the legendary Zonkeraz, to Sons of the Soil, to The Ric Porter Band, Ric’s approach has remained the same: “Play the stuff you love.” He will open the night with his originals, possibly joined by Bob and Arny, and likely to have the band back him on some tunes.
We here at WCUW can’t thank Arny Spielberg enough for putting together this wonderful show, with such top notch musicians, as a benefit for community radio. A heartfelt thank you to each of them for donating their time and talents to make this night possible!
Showtime: Saturday, August 8, 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Suggested minimum donation $20 cash or Venmo. Light refreshments will be served.
The WCUW FrontRoom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Saturday, August 15: Troy Mercy at the FrontRoom
Winner of the 2024/25 Boston Blues Challenge: Troy Mercy returns to the WCUW FrontRoom, with Pat Faherty on bass (of Canyon Lights- originally GA20) and Harrison Foti on drums.
Troy Mercy is an electrifying Blues guitarist with a Rock & Roll heart. He has toured as guitarist with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Booker T. Jones.
Troy recently signed with Gitcha Records of Nashville. The album, Let The Night Begin, is now available. “Expect songs you’ll be singing in your head later. This is raw and wild vintage-toned Rock & Roll that’s being created in the present.” (Gitcha Records) Come to the Frontroom and get it on vinyl or CD, along with a t-shirt.
Troy explains: “The power-duo format has brought me to life. I kinda need a lot to do musically or I just end up chewing on furniture, you know? Stripping things down to just voice, guitar, drums, gives me the most immediate emotional connection between my singing and guitar playing. There are no presets. I can steer the whole thing right off the edge of the world if I want to. Or play something pretty too.” He continues, “[I play] Brave New Blues for a Mean Old World.”
“This duo is like Lightnin’ Hopkins playing with The Small Faces while David Lynch films it.” -Alan Smithee
Showtime: Saturday, August 15, 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Tickets $20 cash or Venmo at the door. Light refreshments will be served.
The WCUW FrontRoom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Sunday, August 16: The Russo Brothers Jazz Quintet at the FrontRoom
The Russo Brothers- the areas most amazing, funky, top notch jazz band– come to the FrontRoom. Join us for a fantastic night of being blown away by this quintet.
When you hear the Russo Brothers play, it is immediately apparent they are not a paint-by-number jazz group. The band’s music contains traces of all the music they grew up with, including blues and funk. “The word jazz kind of puts you in a box,” says Jim Russo. “We’re not in that box.”
Showtime: Sunday, August 16, 6:00 pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Tickets $20 cash or Venmo at the door. Light refreshments will be served.
The WCUW FrontRoom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
