Film in the WCUW FrontRoom
Presented by Cinema Worcester

Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie”, a film by Alex Gibney.

More than 30 years after Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, a religious decree calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie over the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses, Rushdie traveled to Chautauqua to speak about the United States as a sanctuary for exiled writers and artists.

The event marked the 20th anniversary of a writer-refuge program – a setting meant to celebrate safety and creative freedom. It was there that a young man rushed the stage, intent on killing him with a knife.

Using excerpts from Rushdie’s works, including his powerful memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder, Alex Gibney’s documentary is both a striking testament to freedom of expression and a defiant response to the attempt on Rushdie’s life.

The film incorporates never-before-seen footage shot by Rushdie’s wife in the days and weeks following the attack, offering a graphic, unflinching, and deeply intimate account of what happened. Archival footage documents Rushdie’s early career and rise to literary fame, the controversy surrounding The Satanic Verses, and the events leading up to the attempted murder.

“A vibrant testament to the intellectual life of its subject.” – The Hollywood Reporter

“This is a simple but strong document about the importance of art as a way to comment on the world, the artist’s resilience in the face of the controversies their work might inspire, and the determination not to let violence be the answer to everything.” – Peter Sobczynski, RogerEbert.com

Run time is 1 hour and 47 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Saturday, October 17, 1 pm, and Sunday, October 18, 1 pm.

Purchase tickets online: . $14.64 general admission, $12.51 senior/student with ID, $11.44 for WCUW members (processing fees included).

Saturday, October 17: The Russo Brothers Jazz Quintet at the FrontRoom

The Russo Brothers- the areas most amazing, funky, top notch jazz band– come to the FrontRoom. Join us for a fantastic night of being blown away by this quintet.

When you hear the Russo Brothers play, it is immediately apparent they are not a paint-by-number jazz group.

The band’s music contains traces of all the music they grew up with, including blues and funk. “The word jazz kind of puts you in a box,” says Jim Russo. “We’re not in that box.”

Showtime: Saturday, October 17, 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Tickets $20 cash or Venmo at the door. Light refreshments will be served.

The WCUW FrontRoom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Sunday, October 18: Evening Sky, with special guest Mino Lanzieri, at the FrontRoom

Evening Sky is a jazz/roots quartet consisting of pedal steel guitar, electric guitar, bass, and drums. This unusual combination gives modern interpretations to jazz, rock, country, and pop tunes as well as soulful and infectious originals that range from atmospheric and contemplative to driving and funky.

The band has a knack for combining the classic elements of American music (jazz, folk, R&B, country) to form a unique, spirited sound. Their rhythmic, smooth, and playful approach has been compared to artists as diverse as Bill Frisell, Bill Withers, Bill Monroe, and Bill Laswell. (And that’s just the Bills!)

“Providence’s Evening Sky isn’t your typical jazz band, and it isn’t your typical roots music band either. They find a balance between the two styles while at the same time incorporating elements of country, R&B, funk, and soul to create a multi-dimensional sound.” – Rob Duguay, Warwick Beacon

“My first time seeing Evening Sky live and what a treat! Great grooves, (almost) familiar melodies that evoke an intelligent mix of eras and styles, all with great improvisation throughout and almost all original material. I encourage you to go see them live as soon as you can!” – Duke Robillard, world-renowned guitarist

Showtime: Sunday, October 18, 5:00 pm. Doors open at 4:30 pm. Tickets $20 cash or Venmo at the door. Light refreshments will be served.

The WCUW FrontRoom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
