Thursday, October 8 and Friday, October 9: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “The History of Concrete”
Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “The History of Concrete”, a film by John Wilson.
Following the finale of his acclaimed HBO series “How To with John Wilson”, NYC documentarian John Wilson looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure.
Concrete, the world’s most widely used building material, appears as an ever-present life force, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter. After attending a workshop on how to write and sell a Hallmark movie, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to tell this seemingly drab story and increase his movie’s appeal.
Inspired by his apartment building’s crumbling foundations, he tests this aspirational, escapist formula on the world’s love affair with concrete.
But his foundation soon begins to crumble–literally and figuratively–as he struggles to balance artistic freedom with the realities of the modern film industry.
“I doubt any movie, especially any documentary, will make me laugh harder this year, and many of its emotional grace notes land fully. Even with my high expectations, The History of Concrete is a small triumph.” – The Hollywood Reporter
Run time is 1 hour and 40 minutes. NR.
Showtimes: Thursday, October 8, 7 pm, and Friday, October 9, 7 pm.
Purchase tickets online: . $14.64 general admission, $12.51 senior/student with ID, $11.44 for WCUW members (processing fees included).
Tickets at the door: $12 general admission, $10 senior/student with ID, $9 for WCUW members.
The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “American Doctor”
Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “American Doctor”, a film by Poh Si Teng.
American Doctor is a vérité documentary following three prominent physicians – Palestinian, Jewish and Zoroastrian — friends who couldn’t be more different but are bound by the shared oath to save lives.
Dr. Thaer Ahmad is measured and strategic, Dr. Mark Perlmutter is blunt and wears his heart on his sleeve, and Dr. Feroze Sidhwa is media-savvy and prolific. Filmed in unfolding, on-the-ground scenes, the story follows them from a Gazan hospital under siege, to the halls of Congress.
Together they fight to keep a promise to their Palestinian colleagues and patients, to continue the struggle where it matters most: the United States.
“Three doctors travel to Gaza in a bracing and essential documentary about treating the despair of an ongoing genocide.” – IndieWire
“The moral weight of American Doctor lies not just in its depiction of Gaza but its unflinching examination of the political and media machinery that enables it.” – David Smith , The Guardian
Run time is 1 hour and 33 minutes. NR.
Showtimes: Saturday, October 10, 1 pm, and Sunday, October 11, 1 pm.

Inherited Echoes:
A Central American Diaspora Exhibition
Harold Stevens Gallery inside WCUW 91.3 FM Community Radio
910 Main Street, Worcester, MA
Curated by: Vanessa Calixto and Veronica Melendez
Opening: Saturday, October 10, 2026
On view: October 10–November 4, 2026
El Salón presents Inherited Echoes, a multidisciplinary exhibition celebrating the histories, creativity, and lived experiences of the Central American diaspora. The exhibition will be on view at the Harold Stevens Gallery inside WCUW 91.3 FM Community Radio at 910 Main Street in Worcester. Inherited Echos brings together artists with roots across Central America, including Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Belize, and Panama.
Co-curated by El Salón founder Vanessa Calixto and interdisciplinary artist and educator Veronica Melendez, Inherited Echoes explores how stories, culture, memory, and identity are carried across borders and generations. Through a range of artistic mediums, participating artists address memory, resistance, hope, belonging, and cultural inheritance.
Inherited Echos is presented at WCUW, a community radio station and cultural space where art, music, spoken word, film, and conversation come together. WCUW Community radio serves as both a gathering place and a means of transmitting voices, stories, music, and memory across time and distance.
Programming will include an opening celebration featuring La Horchata Zine, a curated Central American music hour and aired artist interviews on WCUW, and a collaboration with Cinema Worcester featuring short films by diasporic filmmakers.
Inherited Echoes is supported by the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, Mass Cultural Council, and the Barr Foundation.
About the Curators:
Vanessa Calixto is a Worcester-based artist, organizer, and curator whose work centers on social practice, cultural organizing, community building, and collective memory. She is the founder and creative director of El Salón, a collective of BIPOC artists creating platforms and opportunities for underrepresented artists and
Veronica Melendez is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and educator based in Baltimore, MD. Her work explores migration, Civil War histories, and Mesoamerican Indigenous imaginaries. She is the founder of La Horchata Zine, an arts publication highlighting artists with Central American roots. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post, NPR, Hyperallergic, and The Brooklyn Rail. Melendez is also a faculty member in the Photography Dept. at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
