Sunday, July 13 to Wednesday, August 20: “Emerging Artists”

The Harold Stevens Gallery at WCUW presents Emerging Artists, featuring four innovative emerging artists exploring themes of identity, memory, privilege and perception through diverse artistic practices.

The exhibition highlights:

Colby Casacca, whose paintings and sculptures explore queer identity and challenge societal expectations of masculinity through intimate and thought-provoking imagery.

Wynne Dromey, a recent graduate of Clark University, whose textured work celebrates confidence, individuality, and self-love by incorporating recycled materials such as handbags, handmade paper, receipts, dried paint, and plastic bags.

Taylor Green, a multidisciplinary artist focusing on psychological reflection, female perspectives, and personal memory through narrative-rich paintings using perspective, geometry, and symbolism.

Angela Risotti, who uses heliographic printing and photography to investigate memory and time, creating layered and abstracted images that encourage presence and reflection.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

The opening reception is on Sunday, July 13, 4 to 6 pm. It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Thursday, August 14: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Weeknights”

C

inema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Weeknights”, a film by Alfred Giancarli.

Three guys working the graveyard shift around a deserted urban college campus try to make it through a long and lonely night on the job.

Lonely dudes in liminal spaces… a film about the small tolls of work, and the infrequent moments of communion that break up long stretches of isolation.

Director Alfred Giancarli will join us to screen his film Weeknights. A fascinating example of “slow cinema”, Alfred will provide an introduction as well as a Q&A after the show. The film has played at the Brooklyn Film Festival, the Sidewalk Film Festival, where it won the Programmer’s Award for Best Feature, and SCUFF, where it won Best Feature.

Run time is 1 hour 8 minutes. NR.

Showtime: August 14, 7 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Dance Party Weekend in the WCUW Front Room

Saturday, August 23rd, and Sunday, August 24th

Free parking across the street.

There’s no cover charge for either show, but your

-

WCUW is presenting two huge dance party events, back-to-back, not only to help raise summer funds, but also to celebrate two legendary DJs who graced the airwaves of WCUW for many years! That would be Paul Lauzon on air from 1999 to 2025 and Milton Cordiero, who was on air from 1984 to 2020!

It all starts with a SOCK HOP TRIBUTE in the WCUW FRONT ROOM on Saturday, August 23rd - Doors Open at 7 PM. This very special tribute is to honor the late Paul Lauzon, the DJ King of Rock' n' Roll! 1942 ~ 2025

The special Sock Hop celebration for Paul Lauzon will feature music from Paul's archive and will be spun by Paul's nephew, Eric, and son, John Lauzon. Additionally, there will be a musical performance by Elvis impersonator Dan Fontaine - https://newenglandelvis.com/bio. "Dan Fontaine is an award-winning Elvis Tribute Artist, and has competed at Images of The King and Ultimate Elvis festivals/competitions nationally and internationally."

Sock Hop to Lindy Hop!

And the Dance Party continues on Sunday, August 24th at 5 PM with Philadelphia-based April Mae & the June Bugs, who bring a high-energy blend of Lindy Hop, Swing, Boogie Woogie, and Rockabilly - in tribute to former WCUW Oldies DJ Milton Cordiero (1943–2022) ~ https://aprilmaeandthejunebugs.com/

Milton Cordiero - 1943 – 2022

Also known as Uncle Milty, Milton was the resident authority on Doo Wop; his ardor for Doo Wop reflected through both the wide range of material he played for listeners and his rapport with his audience. Cordiero could be counted on to dig into his record library for all-time gems like ''Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown" or "Poison Ivy," by The Coasters or "Blue Moon" by The Marcels. Cordiero's reverence for the tracks and artists he selected for airtime was as constant as the baseball cap he wore behind the microphone.

All monies raised on behalf of these events, as well as our on-air campaign starting August 4th, will be matched up to $10,000 by an anonymous donor. Admission to the concerts is a goodwill donation. If you won't be able to attend either event, but would still like to help, please visit www.wcuw.org and donate via the Big Green Button!

Many thanks to author Rodney Lee for his insights on Paul Lauzon and Milton Cordiero. And a special thanks to our anonymous donor!

Friday, August 15 thru Sunday, August 17: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Sorry Baby”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Sorry Baby”, a film by Eva Victor.

Something bad happened to Agnes, but life goes on for everyone else. When a beloved friend on the brink of a major milestone visits, Agnes starts to realize just how stuck she’s been, and begins to work through how to move forward.

The film explores themes of friendship, grief, and the challenges of moving forward after experiencing trauma, all while portraying these experiences with a mix of humor and realism.

“Carrying off difficult subject matter with a light touch and wry sense of humor, Sorry, Baby triumphantly announces writer-director and star Eva Victor as a formidable talent. Certified Fresh.” RottenTomatoes.com

“Tough, tender and observational, “Sorry, Baby” suggests that Victor’s promising career has been suitably launched. The best, with luck, is yet to come.” The Washington Post

Run time is 1 hour 43 minutes. R (Sexual Content and Language).

Showtimes: Friday, August 15, 7 pm; Saturday, August 16, 1 pm; and Sunday, August 17, 1 pm.

Thursday, August 21 thru Sunday, August 24: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Don’t Le

t’s Go to the Dogs Tonight”, a film by Embeth Davidtz.

Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight thrusts us into the tumultuous world of 8-year-old Bobo, whose childhood unfolds on her family’s Rhodesian farm, now Zimbabwe, as the Bush War rages to its bitter end.

Set against this violent backdrop, and seen through her eyes, we witness the family’s desperate attachment to Africa’s soil and the deep, festering scars of a war that reshapes both land and soul.

“There’s truth in the foundation of this film, truth that only this filmmaker could provide.” Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

Run time is 1 hour 38 minutes. R (Violent/bloody images | Language | Some underage smoking/drinking | Sexual assault).

Showtimes: Thursday, August 21, 7 pm; Friday, August 22, 7 pm; Saturday, August 23, 1 pm; and Sunday, August 24, 1 pm.

When you need a positive energy source to rejuvenate the mind and soul
