Now thru Sunday, December 21: 
Community Silent Art Auction

The Harold Stevens Gallery invites the community to celebrate the Season of Giving with a special Community Silent Art Auction, featuring original works by some of the region’s most talented artists.

This festive event supports grassroots arts and cultural programming that enriches and enlivens our community.

The Opening Reception will be held on Wednesday, December 3, from 6–8 PM, showcasing works by Frank Armstrong, Lisa Barthelson, Louis Despres, Stephen DiRado, Dan Hunt, Howard Johnson, Rosemary Lebeau, Al Souza, Sue Swinand, and Jill Watts, along with special contributions from the WCUW family.

Guests are encouraged to join in the spirit of giving—discovering unique, original art while supporting local artists and WCUW’s creative initiatives that help Worcester’s cultural scene thrive.

Silent bidding will take place during the Opening Reception, with a final opportunity to bid and collect purchased works during the Holiday Happy Hour on Sunday, December 21, from 5–7 PM (final bids accepted 5–5:30 PM).

We invite you to celebrate the holiday season, community, and creativity with us at both the Opening Reception and the Holiday Happy Hour.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

Hometown Heroes: Gail and Dan Hunt!

“Hometown Heroes” are nominated by Worcester Magazine readers. Gail and Dan were nominated for “revitalizing WCUW and making it a destination for cultural activities.”

Since it reopened late last year, the Frontroom at WCUW Community Radio at 910 Main St. has become one of Worcester’s most increasingly popular yet intimate venues for music.

WCUW is a destination for filmgoers and art-lovers as well, with Cinema Worcester also in the Frontroom and the Howard Stevens Gallery literally a couple of steps away right on the premises.

Gail and Dan Hunt have helped play a big part in WCUW’s new look, from creating the gallery to making the Frontroom feel and sound great, as well as helping to book and get the word out about its concerts featuring rock, blues, jazz and more.

Thursday, December 18: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Black Christmas (1974)”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Black Christmas (1974)”, a film by Bob Clark. Dan Ducas returns with this classic 70s slasher! And he brought along some extra fun stuff!

As winter break begins, a group of sorority sisters, including Jess (Olivia Hussey) and the often inebriated Barb (Margot Kidder), begin to receive anonymous, lascivious phone calls.

Initially, Barb eggs the caller on, but stops when he responds threateningly. Soon, Barb’s friend Clare (Lynne Griffin) goes missing from the sorority house, and a local adolescent girl is murdered, leading the girls to suspect a serial killer is on the loose. But no one realizes just how near the culprit is.

Run time is 1 hour and 38 minutes. R (Disturbing images | Horror violence | Language that includes sexual references).

Showtime: Thursday, December 18, 7 pm.

Sunday, December 21: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Wings of Desire (1987)”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Wings of Desire (1987)”, a film by Wim Wenders. Suggested through our famous suggest-a-film feature at cinema-worcester.com, we are proud to show this wonderful film from 1987!

Two angels, Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander), glide through the streets of Berlin, observing the bustling population, providing invisible rays of hope to the distressed but never interacting with them.

When Damiel falls in love with lonely trapeze artist Marion (Solveig Dommartin), the angel longs to experience life in the physical world, and finds–with some words of wisdom from actor Peter Falk (playing himself) — that it might be possible for him to take human form.

“Wim Wenders’ astonishing, award-winning fantasy drama depicts life in a divided Berlin through the eyes of angels.” – The Times (UK)
