Thursday, January 8, thru Sunday, January 11: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk”, a film by Sepideh Farsi.

Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk offers an intimate, first-hand perspective on life under siege in Gaza, captured through video calls between director Sepideh Farsi and 25-year-old Palestinian photojournalist and poet Fatma Hassona.

Combining raw immediacy with deep humanity, the film captures daily life during the conflict through the eyes and unwaveringly optimistic presence of Fatma, a talented photographer whose generation is trapped in an endless cycle of war, famine, and resistance. Her conversations with Farsi bring us into the heart of the conflict, even while their physical distance underscores the dire situation inside Gaza.

Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk is an essential document that now stands as a heartfelt memorial and final testament: Fatma and her family were tragically killed by a targeted Israeli airstrike on April 16, one day after the film was announced as a selection of the Cannes Film Festival.

“Simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking, it is one of the best movies of the year, despite being made on a shoestring budget under challenging circumstances.” – San Francisco Chronicle

Run time is 1 hour and 52 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Thursday, January 8, 7 pm; Friday, January 9, 7 pm; Saturday January 10, 1 pm; and Sunday, January 11, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

Happy Holidays!

Saturday, January 3, thru Saturday, February 21: The Stars Are Out Tonight

Harold Stevens Gallery is proud to present The Stars Are Out Tonight, a two-person multimedia exhibition featuring the work of father and son artists J-Me Johnston and Jaiden Johnston.

The exhibition centers on imagery inspired by the music icon and English actor David Bowie, marking the 10th anniversary of his passing on January 10, 2016. J-Me Johnston’s work reflects decades of devoted study, tracing Bowie’s extraordinary career from the 1960s through his many artistic transformations and reinventions. The exhibition explores Bowie’s iconic personas, including Ziggy Stardust, alongside his theatrical and cinematic legacy, with particular attention to his portrayal of the alien Thomas Jerome Newton in the 1976 film The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Complementing this body of work are paintings by Jaiden Johnston, featuring contemporary pop stars and cultural celebrities, offering a new generational perspective on fame, identity, and stardom.

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, J-Me Johnston is a celebrated visual and performance artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the Worcester area for more than four decades. His exhibition history includes participation with the Worcester Artist Group, ArtsWorcester, stART on the Street, and the Sprinkler Factory.

Opening reception: Saturday, January 3, 5 to 7 pm. Snow date: Saturday, January 10, 5 to 7 pm.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

Saturday, January 17: Troy Mercy at the Frontroom

Winner of the 2024/25 Boston Blues Challenge: Troy Mercy returns to the WCUW Frontroom!

Troy Mercy is an electrifying Blues power-duo with a Rock & Roll heart. He has toured as guitarist with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Booker T. Jones.

For this show, Troy will be on vocal, guitar, and harmonica, with Harrison Foti on drums.

“The power-duo format has brought me to life. I kinda need a lot to do musically or I just end up chewing on furniture, you know? Stripping things down to just voice, guitar, drums, gives me the most immediate emotional connection between my singing and guitar playing. There are no presets. I can steer the whole thing right off the edge of the world if I want to. Or play something pretty too.”

“This duo is like Lightnin’ Hopkins playing with The Small Faces while David Lynch films it.” -Alan Smithee

Showtime: Saturday, January 17, 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Tickets $15 cash or Venmo at the door.

Light refreshments will be served. Or, visit Fantastic Pizza/Grub Guru next door for pizza, Indian food, and more, to eat-in or to bring back.
