Thursday, July 10 thru Sunday, July 13: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “76 Days Adrift”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “76 Days Adrift”, a film by Joe Wein.

From Executive Producer Ang Lee comes 76 Days Adrift—a profoundly immersive documentary that plunges you into the heart of one man’s extraordinary survival story.

Steven Callahan, the author of the New York Times bestseller Adrift: 76 Days Lost at Sea, recounts the night of February 4, 1982, when a catastrophic collision with a whale left his boat sinking in the dead of night. With the Atlantic Ocean surging into his vessel, Steven had only moments to grab what he could before launching himself into the dark, unforgiving sea in a life raft, clutching a basic emergency kit.

For an astonishing 76 days, that fragile inflatable raft became Steven’s entire world as he drifted helplessly across the vast expanse of the Atlantic. Forced to confront his deepest fears, limitations, and the raw power of nature, he discovered an inner strength he never knew he possessed.

Directed by Joe Wein and set to a haunting score by Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, 76 Days Adrift is more than just a survival story—it’s a powerful meditation on human endurance, resilience, and the profound connection between man and nature.

Run time is 1 hour 45 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Thursday, July 10, 7 pm; Friday, July 11, 7 pm; Saturday, July 12, 1 pm; and Sunday, July 13, 1 pm.

The Friday night showing is a special screening! We will be joined by the Executive Producer of 76 Days Adrift, Robert Sennott, for the screening and Q & A.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Sunday, July 13 to Wednesday, August 20: “Emerging Artists”

The Harold Stevens Gallery at WCUW presents Emerging Artists, featuring four innovative emerging artists exploring themes of identity, memory, privilege and perception through diverse artistic practices.

The exhibition highlights:

Colby Casacca, whose paintings and sculptures explore queer identity and challenge societal expectations of masculinity through intimate and thought-provoking imagery.

Wynne Dromey, a recent graduate of Clark University, whose textured work celebrates confidence, individuality, and self-love by incorporating recycled materials such as handbags, handmade paper, receipts, dried paint, and plastic bags.

Taylor Green, a multidisciplinary artist focusing on psychological reflection, female perspectives, and personal memory through narrative-rich paintings using perspective, geometry, and symbolism.

Angela Risotti, who uses heliographic printing and photography to investigate memory and time, creating layered and abstracted images that encourage presence and reflection.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

The opening reception is on Sunday, July 13, 4 to 6 pm. It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Thursday, July 24 thru Sunday, July 27: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Commune”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents a 20th Anniversary restoration of “Commune”, a film by Jonathan Berman.

In 1968, a group of American dissidents move to the remote woods of Northern California to create a new, utopian society. They struggle with surviving the winter, an invading cult, and their wildly varying ideas of what utopia might really be.

2025 Directors Note:

With the very real modern struggles of Trump’s America, people are seeking solutions of every kind to an increasing authoritarianism. As feminist activist Carol Hanisch wrote in 1969, “the personal is political,” and nothing is more personal than how we live and the who, what, and where of the place we call home.

We present a new, up-resed version of the first modern documentary to deal with communal living and cults, subjects which have skyrocketed in popularity over the past years. In our modern high-tech world, where an Amazon delivery is moments away and there’s less need to leave our dwellings, we face a plague of loneliness. Is coming together the cure? Or perhaps, as Sartre wrote “hell is—other people!”

Run time is 1 hour 18 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Thursday, July 24, 7 pm; Friday, July 25, 7 pm; Saturday, July 26, 1 pm; and Sunday, July 27, 1 pm.

Saturday, July 26: Troy Mercy at the Frontroom

Winner of the 2024/25 Boston Blues Challenge: come see Troy Mercy at the WCUW Frontroom.

Troy Mercy brings the raw sound of Electric Blues into the 21st Century. With Troy on vocal, guitar, and harmonica.

Troy toured as guitarist with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Booker T. Jones.

Pushing boundaries with fearless performance, artful lyrics, hooks and melody, Troy extends the tradition and creates the future. “I breathe the blues. I have a rock ‘n’ roll heart. It’s about the songs and the connection with the audience for me. That and bringing an element of danger and excitement to the stage. “

“This duo is like Lightnin’ Hopkins playing with The Small Faces while David Lynch films it.” -Alan Smithee

Troy just returned from playing the Delta Blues Festival in Italy. We are excited to have him back at WCUW !

Showtime: Saturday, July 26, 7:30 pm. Tickets $15 cash at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
