Sunday, July 13 to Wednesday, August 20: “Emerging Artists”

The Harold Stevens Gallery at WCUW presents Emerging Artists, featuring four innovative emerging artists exploring themes of identity, memory, privilege and perception through diverse artistic practices.

The exhibition highlights:

Colby Casacca, whose paintings and sculptures explore queer identity and challenge societal expectations of masculinity through intimate and thought-provoking imagery.

Wynne Dromey, a recent graduate of Clark University, whose textured work celebrates confidence, individuality, and self-love by incorporating recycled materials such as handbags, handmade paper, receipts, dried paint, and plastic bags.

Taylor Green, a multidisciplinary artist focusing on psychological reflection, female perspectives, and personal memory through narrative-rich paintings using perspective, geometry, and symbolism.

Angela Risotti, who uses heliographic printing and photography to investigate memory and time, creating layered and abstracted images that encourage presence and reflection.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

The opening reception is on Sunday, July 13, 4 to 6 pm. It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Saturday, July 26: Troy Mercy at the Frontroom

Winner of the 2024/25 Boston Blues Challenge: come see Troy Mercy at the WCUW Frontroom.

Troy Mercy brings the raw sound of Electric Blues into the 21st Century. With Troy on vocal, guitar, and harmonica.

Troy toured as guitarist with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Booker T. Jones.

Pushing boundaries with fearless performance, artful lyrics, hooks and melody, Troy extends the tradition and creates the future. “I breathe the blues. I have a rock ‘n’ roll heart. It’s about the songs and the connection with the audience for me. That and bringing an element of danger and excitement to the stage. “

“This duo is like Lightnin’ Hopkins playing with The Small Faces while David Lynch films it.” -Alan Smithee

Troy just returned from playing the Delta Blues Festival in Italy. We are excited to have him back at WCUW !

Showtime: Saturday, July 26, 7:30 pm. Tickets $15 cash at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

1942 ~ 2025

Doors Open at 7 PM - 9 PM

910 Main Street Worcester, MA

Your Goodwill Donation At The Door

WILL BE MATCHED 100% UNTIL WE REACH $10,000!

This special celebration for Paul Lauzon is a SOCK HOP that will feature music from Paul's archive and will be spun by Paul's nephew, Eric, and son, John Lauzon.

Additionally, there will be a musical performance by Elvis impersonator Dan Fontainehttps://newenglandelvis.com/bio. "Dan Fontaine is an award-winning Elvis Tribute Artist, and has competed at Images of The King and Ultimate Elvis festivals/competitions nationally and internationally."

All monies raised on behalf of this event will be matched up to $10,000 by an anonymous donor! Admission is a goodwill donation. If you won't be able to attend the event, but would still like to help, please visit www.wcuw.org and donate via the Big Green Button!

Borrowing words from Rodney Lee’s book, ‘Whole Lotta Shakin,’ “Paul Lauzon’s on-air antics were primarily responsible for the adoration people felt for him, and the feeling was mutual. ‘I love people! …he would say. Born on the same day as his favorite artist, Elvis Presley (they were also discharged from military service on the same day, March 3, 1963, according to Lauzon), and strongly influenced in his inclinations towards becoming a deejay by both Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack, Lauzon always took to the air with all the crackling energy of an electric current.

Whole Lotta Shakin,’ which also includes stories of the Silverbacks, Cathy’s Clown, and WCUW’s own Jason James, shares that Lauzon began radio at the age of thirteen and had been heard on such stations as WBBZ in Ponca City, Oklahoma, and KLCL FM and MHLA in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Paul also spun music for many private parties and special events in Worcester, including many Friendly House dances.

From 'Whole Lotta Shakin,' “What people who listened to Paul’s 'Echoes of the Past' would hear was a steady stream of Golden Oldies combined with Lauzon’s often-wacky but always entertaining asides, which would spew from his lips like a ball bouncing crazily down the driveway. Lauzon fans held nothing back in blanketing him with praise, in the form of telephone calls, e-mails, letters, etc., for his enthusiastic approach, which harkened back to the days of “old-time radio, which is what he loved.”

For sure, the WCUW community has lost a giant! We’ll resurrect some of his earlier shows and post links to them in the LOBE. And soon, Eric and Dave Lauzon will be on board Fridays from 4 PM to 5 PM, spinning music from Paul’s collection.

NEWS FLASH! We're going to make this a weekend celebration by having April Mae & the Junebugs perform on Sunday evening! Stay tuned for details!
