Thursday, June 12: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Paris is Burning”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents a Pride Month screening of “Paris is Burning”, a film by Jennie Livingston.

This documentary focuses on drag queens living in New York City and their “house” culture, which provides a sense of community and support for the flamboyant and often socially shunned performers. Groups from each house compete in elaborate balls that take cues from the world of fashion. Also touching on issues of racism and poverty, the film features interviews with a number of renowned drag queens, including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija and Dorian Corey.

Run time is 1 hour 18 minutes. R (Language | Sexuality).

Showtime: Thursday, June 12, 7 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

Friday, June 13, thru Sunday, June 15: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Friendship”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Friendship”, a film by Andrew DeYoung.

When an errant delivery pulls suburban dad Craig (Tim Robinson) into the orbit of his mysterious and charismatic new neighbor Austin (Paul Rudd), a sweet bromance seems to blossom over an innocent evening of urban exploration, punk rock, and a mutual appreciation for paleolithic antiquities.

But what should have been the start of a beautiful friendship is soon waylaid as Craig’s obsessive personality begins to alienate his new pal, subsequently inducing a spiral that threatens to upend Craig’s entire life.

“Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd’s new comedy is unpredictable, unhinged—and had my audience in stitches.” Slate

“The star of I Think You Should Leave [Tim Robinson] brings a similar brand of comedy to this strange and genuinely funny film about a friendship breakup.” The Guardian

Saturday, May 17 to Monday, June 30: “My Kind of Blues” by by photographer Tom Hazeltine at the Harold Stevens Gallery

My Kind of Blues, a compelling new photography exhibition by Tom Hazeltine, offers a rare glimpse into Boston’s vibrant blues scene through the lens of a lifelong music lover. This is the artist’s first solo showing of his images, especially the autographed ones, in an in-person exhibition format.

Spanning over four decades, My Kind of Blues features a rich collection of live performance photography of blues musicians in the Greater Boston area.

What began in the 1970s with a Polaroid camera and an open mind grew into a lifelong passion and visual archive. Hazeltine, initially a hard rock fan, was introduced to the blues by a close friend who urged him to “go right to the source.” That advice sparked countless nights at iconic small venues like The Speakeasy, where Hazeltine fell in love with the music, the atmosphere, and the people behind it.

Saturday, June 14: The Matt Swanton Band at the Frontroom

The Matt Swanton Band, brought to you by DJ Laney!

Matt Swanton is a New England guitarist and songwriter who draws inspiration from 60’s and 70’s Blues…with a touch of psyschedelic rock. His screamin’ guitar is backed by a tight rhythm section and some masterful keys. The band’s second CD ‘Growing Pains’ is expected to be released this summer. Check them out at the WCUW Frontroom!

Adam Signore from ‘Making A Scene,’ discussed the band’s debut album:

“let me tell you this release is a joy, start to finish. I hope this translates but there’s a vibe you find at really great blues performances. Sometimes these do not translate to the studio. Not the case here, if you know what I am talking about you’ll already be a little excited about this CD….Top to bottom this is a great listen and I highly recommend. Matt is one of the new up and coming artists from the Boston area.”

Showtime: Saturday, June 14, 7 pm. Tickets $15 cash at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Thursday, June 19: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Tongues Untied”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents a Pride Month screening of “Tongues Untied”, a film by Marlon Riggs, followed with a post-film discussion.

Filmmaker Marlon Riggs gives a voice to communities of gay black men, presenting their cultures and perspectives on the world as they confront racism, homophobia and marginalization.

Thursday, June 19: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Tongues Untied”

Through music and dance, words and poetry by such pathbreaking writers as Essex Hemphill and Joseph Beam—and by turns candid, humorous, and heartbreaking interviews with queer African American men—Tongues Untied gives voice to what it means to live as an outsider in both a Black community rife with homophobia and a largely white gay subculture poisoned by racism.

A lightning rod in the culture wars of the 1980s that incited a right-wing furor over public funding for the arts, the film has lost none of its life-affirming resonance.

Run time is 55 minutes; with discussion, 1 hour 30 minutes. NR.

Showtime: Thursday, June 19, 7 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

Tickets also at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
