Thursday, June 19: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Tongues Untied”

Through music and dance, words and poetry by such pathbreaking writers as Essex Hemphill and Joseph Beam—and by turns candid, humorous, and heartbreaking interviews with queer African American men—Tongues Untied gives voice to what it means to live as an outsider in both a Black community rife with homophobia and a largely white gay subculture poisoned by racism.

A lightning rod in the culture wars of the 1980s that incited a right-wing furor over public funding for the arts, the film has lost none of its life-affirming resonance.

Run time is 55 minutes; with discussion, 1 hour 30 minutes. NR.

Showtime: Thursday, June 19, 7 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

Tickets also at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Caught by the Tides”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Caught by the Tides”, a film by Jia Zhangke.

Assembled from footage shot over a span of 23 years—a beguiling mix of fiction and documentary, featuring a cascade of images taken from previous movies, unused scenes, and newly shot dramatic sequences—Caught by the Tides is a free-flowing work of unspoken longing, carried along more by music than dialogue as it looms around the edges of a poignant love story.

The film mostly adheres to the perspective of Qiaoqiao (Jia’s immortal muse Zhao Tao) as she wanders an increasingly unrecognizable country in search of long-lost lover Bin (Li Zhubin), who left their home city of Datong seeking new financial prospects. The always captivating Zhao carries the film with her delicate expressiveness, while Jia constantly evokes cinema’s ability to capture the passage of time and the persistence of change: of people, landscapes, cities, politics, ideas.

“Caught by the Tides” is a gorgeous vision of loss and renewal. Justing Chang, The New Yorker

Run time is 1 hour 49 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Saturday, June 21, 1 pm and Sunday, June 22, 1 pm. Mandarin, with English subtitles.

Sunday, June 22: Celebrate Black Music Month with WCUW and “Motown Tom” at the Frontroom

June is Black Music Month, and WCUW celebrates with “Motown and The Civil Rights Movement.”

Every decade has its musical phenomenon. In the 1960s, it was Motown…”The Sound Of Young America™, and the music that inspired a generation.

During a turbulent time in American history, Motown and its artists broke down racial, cultural and social barriers more effectively than any other cultural force. It didn’t matter if you were black or white, rich or poor, male or female. We all were listening to, dancing to—and buying—Motown music.

Using archival video and music clips, and memorabilia from his personal archive, “Motown Tom” Ingrassia tells the story of the Civil Rights Movement created the environment for Motown to become the most successful black-owned company in America…and how Motown helped further the cause of Civil Rights.

Having worked with Mary Wilson of The Supremes—as well as other Motown artists—for many years, “Motown Tom” learned this story from the inside out, and he brings this insider perspective to The FrontRoom with this engaging and educational presentation. You’ll be dancing in the street!!

Showtime: Sunday, June 22, 4:30 pm. Tickets $10 cash at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Saturday, May 17 to Monday, June 30: “My Kind of Blues” by by photographer Tom Hazeltine at the Harold Stevens Gallery

My Kind of Blues, a compelling new photography exhibition by Tom Hazeltine, offers a rare glimpse into Boston’s vibrant blues scene through the lens of a lifelong music lover. This is the artist’s first solo showing of his images, especially the autographed ones, in an in-person exhibition format.

Spanning over four decades, My Kind of Blues features a rich collection of live performance photography of blues musicians in the Greater Boston area.

What began in the 1970s with a Polaroid camera and an open mind grew into a lifelong passion and visual archive. Hazeltine, initially a hard rock fan, was introduced to the blues by a close friend who urged him to “go right to the source.” That advice sparked countless nights at iconic small venues like The Speakeasy, where Hazeltine fell in love with the music, the atmosphere, and the people behind it.
