Friday, May 16: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Eraserhead”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Eraserhead”, a film by David Lynch.

Henry (John Nance) resides alone in a bleak apartment surrounded by industrial gloom. When he discovers that an earlier fling with Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) left her pregnant, he marries the expectant mother and has her move in with him.

Things take a decidedly strange turn when the couple’s baby turns out to be a bizarre lizard-like creature that won’t stop wailing. Other characters, including a disfigured lady who lives inside a radiator, inhabit the building and add to Henry’s troubles.

Released in 1977, Lynch’s “Eraserhead” is a steampunk cinematic chamber play, a hallucinatory tour through a private, interior world. The New Yorker

Run time is 1 hour 29 minutes. NR (but TV-MA: mild sex and nudity | moderate violence and gore | mild profanity | severe frightening and intense scenes)

Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “No Other Land”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “No Other Land”, a film by Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra, Rachel Szor, Hamdan Ballal.

An elegantly assembled diary of the Palestinian experience, No Other Land, winner of the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film, is a harrowing document that leaves traces of hope for a better future.

For half a decade, Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist, films his community of Masafer Yatta being destroyed by Israel’s occupation, as he builds an unlikely alliance with a journalist from the other side who joins his fight.

Showing the destruction of homes and villages in the West Bank region of Masafer Yatta by Israeli military forces, No Other Land looks at the conflict through the eyes of both Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers Abraham, Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal and Rachel Szor. It also shows the differences in freedom Abraham experiences versus the limits Adra faces as a Palestinian activist.

Saturday, May 17 to Monday, June 30: “My Kind of Blues” by by photographer Tom Hazeltine at the Harold Stevens Gallery

My Kind of Blues, a compelling new photography exhibition by Tom Hazeltine, offers a rare glimpse into Boston’s vibrant blues scene through the lens of a lifelong music lover. This is the artist’s first solo showing of his images, especially the autographed ones, in an in-person exhibition format.

Spanning over four decades, My Kind of Blues features a rich collection of live performance photography of blues musicians in the Greater Boston area.

What began in the 1970s with a Polaroid camera and an open mind grew into a lifelong passion and visual archive. Hazeltine, initially a hard rock fan, was introduced to the blues by a close friend who urged him to “go right to the source.” That advice sparked countless nights at iconic small venues like The Speakeasy, where Hazeltine fell in love with the music, the atmosphere, and the people behind it.

Saturday, May 17: Sugar Ray and the Bluetones at the Frontroom

Sugar Ray and the Bluetones- award-winning, legendary, rockin', traditional blues band coming to our Fantastic Front Room!

This fantastic music show is in conjunction with a blues photography exhibit by Tom Hazeltine in the adjacent Harold Steven Gallery at WCUW. The exhibit celebrates the show's opening on May 17th, 4-6 p.m.

"Sugar Ray is the real deal. Nobody is better to represent this music." - Kim Wilson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

"Sugar Ray has great tone and phrasing, singing and playing the harp. One of my favorites." - Charlie Musslewhite

Sunday, May 18:  Stephen B Martin and Friends at the Frontroom (Early file image)

Singer, songwriter, author, Stephen B Martin comes to perform in support of our community radio station!

Stephen Martin started out as a folksinger in the hard-nosed mid-60s Worcester folk scene. He was a member of the Boston Sound centerpiece Orpheus, who recorded 15 of his original compositions. One of them, Congress Alley, has been covered by five other artists. A total of twenty-one of his songs have been released on major labels, and another thirty on independent labels.

After 14 years in San Francisco, Stephen returned to New England in 1987, where he continued writing, performing, and recording. Over the past fifteen years, Stephen has produced eight CDs and a novel, Thumper. You can read more about Stephen here.

For this performance, Stephen will be joined by Michael Gutierrez-May, a singer-songwriter focusing on original songwriting, songwriting collaborations and occasional live performances. He has been involved in folk and acoustic music for the past 35 years as a coffeehouse manager, concert organizer and now as a songwriter and performer.

Michael’s new album Light Still Shines The Same, released in December 2024, has been described as a “luminous journey through history with heart and humor” by Whitney Miller of Vocal Media. You can read more about Michael here. He will be performing with Raianne Richards.

Opening will be “Invasive Species” (John Solaperto, Dan Hunt and Evan Harriman)

Bring a picnic and enjoy a very special night of music. The show starts at 5 pm.

Suggested donation of $15 cash at door, with all proceeds to support WCUW!

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA.
