A note from Andy Girgorov, presenter of Cinema Worcester: Cinema Worcester has been operating out of the wonderful Frontroom since November 2024, bringing independent and foreign films to the city every week. WCUW has been a generous and supportive partner in this endeavor, and we heartily recommend that moviegoers become full-fledged WCUW members to support the station and take advantage of the many benefits, including discounts on select movies and events! https://wcuw.org/donate ~ And thank you!

WCUW ~ Music ~ Art ~ Film ~ Radio

Saturday, November 1, thru Friday, November 28: Creatures of Worcester 5

The Harold Stevens Gallery at WCUW presents Creatures of Worcester 5.

Imagine that there are colorful creatures living among us as we go about our daily lives – passing us on the street as we walk to work in the morning, stopping to sniff a flower in Elm Park, or crowd surfing over our heads at a concert. Creatures that don’t look like us but are just like us – looking to have a great time living this thing called life.

Peer into the minds of local artists as they give you their interpretations of what this might look like. The walls of The Harold Stevens Gallery at WCUW will come alive with visions into this imaginative world we share with the Creatures of Worcester.

Photography by Lex Graziano. The Creatures are by Brian J Hoffman, Dead Rabbits, Taylor Pritts, Iriiises, Jordan Gagner, Almighty Bea, Pretty Kitty Press, Emma Rhiannon, Savage, Chris Michelotti, Kay Lee, and Son.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street or on the street.

Thursday, November 13 thru Sunday, November 16: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Orwell: 2+2=5”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Orwell: 2+2=5”, a film by Raoul Peck.

“Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past…,” wrote Orwell in his novel, 1984. Today, the “newspeak” of authoritarian rule is alive and well and in unexpected places, from the rise of AI Chatbots to the Russian propaganda machine, from the marketing webs of commercial metaverses to the political banning of books in the United States.

Peck’s Orwell will use George Orwell’s life, work and legacy as a maverick iconoclastic writer to jam the signals of the algorithms gone rogue which, in the name of personal freedom, threaten to close our minds to a greater possibility.

Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5 is a dense, urgent, and unapologetically blunt documentary that offers a chillingly relevant examination of totalitarianism’s enduring appeal and the societal conditions that enable it.

From Academy Award®-nominated and BAFTA-winning director, Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro), Orwell is the definitive feature-length documentary on visionary author George Orwell, with the exclusive cooperation of the Orwell Estate. ‍

Run time is 1 hour and 59 minutes. R (some violent content | brief graphic nudity).

Showtimes: Thursday, November 13, 7 pm; Friday, November 14, 7 pm; Saturday November 15, 1 pm; and Sunday, November 16, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Odacova comes to the Frontroom

Odacova is a five-piece musical force born from the vibrant energy of the festival scene.

What began as a chance encounter quickly ignited into a creative fire, and the rest, as they say, is guacamole!

Showtime: Saturday, November 15, 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets $20 cash or Venmo at the door.

Thursday, November 20 thru Sunday, November 23: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Blue Moon”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Blue Moon”, a film by Richard Linklater.

“…You know how in marriage they say “for better or for worse”? I think, in terms of my life, I have entered the “for worse” part, and it happened so quietly I didn’t even recognize it.”

Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon tells the story of legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart bravely facing the future as his professional and private life unravel at the opening night party for his former partner’s hit show Oklahoma!

By the time this night is over, Hart will have confronted both a world that no longer values his talent and the seeming impossibility of love.

Run time is 1 hour and 40 minutes. R (language | sexual references).

Showtimes: Thursday, November 20, 7 pm; Friday, November 21, 7 pm; Saturday November 22, 1 pm; and Sunday, November 23, 1 pm.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?

Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

Saturday, November 22: Throwing Stones at the Frontroom

Throwing Stones comes to the Frontroom, brought to you by WCUW’s “The Drifter”.

Throwing Stones was formed in late 2023 and spent nearly a year learning and refining their repertoire. The idea was simple: play tribute to the two greatest touring acts of all time, The Rolling Stones and Grateful Dead.

These songs were not to meant to be copied, but reinterpreted on a night-to-night basis. Sound-wise, the band landed in the middle of both acts: Rolling Stones songs became longer and more jam focused, Dead tunes often grew louder and more raucous.

Throwing Stones began playing venues and festivals throughout New England starting in November 2024 and were an immediate hit among local fans of both bands. They have been filling dance floors and festival fields with their unique blend of booty-shaking groves and face-melting explorations.

Throwing Stones is Derek Varnum on guitar and vocals, Mike Prisby on guitar and vocals; Ron Szczepaniak on bass; Mike Higgins on keys, synth and backing vocals; Charlie Shimkus on drums; and Mike Harnois on percussion and harmonica.

Showtime: Saturday, November 22, 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets $20 cash or Venmo at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Saturday, November 29: Paul Rishell and Annie Raines at the Frontroom

For 31 years Paul Rishell and Annie Raines have been hailed as one of the world’s best blues duos. They now bring their music to the Frontroom.

Paul and Annie have recorded 6 albums together including the W.C. Handy Award-winning Moving to the Country (2000), and received numerous award nominations from the Blues Foundation. They have performed and recorded with John Sebastian, Susan Tedeschi, Pinetop Perkins and Rory Block.

They have opened for Ray Charles, Dr. John, and Little Feat, and performed on international radio and TV shows including Late Night with Conan O’Brien and A Prairie Home Companion. Find out more about these artists here.

“While their guitar, harmonica, and vocals are roiling, muscular, and masterful, their shows are down home- friendly and fun-loving.” – Scott Alarik, Boston Globe

“…Rishell is a master of country/blues styles, particularly slide played on a National steel guitar. Raines, a rare female ace blues harmonica blower, shows that she is as strong an acoustic country harp accompanist as she is a harder-edged, electrified Chicago-style lead player à la the great Little Walter…” –Billboard

Showtime: Saturday, November 29, 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00. Tickets $25 cash or Venmo at the door. Advance tickets are now available at Eventbrite for $28.52 (includes $3.52 processing fee). Get them while they last!
