IN The HAROLD STEVENS GALLERY:

Sunday, September 28 to Monday, October 27: Antonio Fonseca Vasquez – Still Puerto Rican

The Harold Stevens Gallery at WCUW presents an exhibition by contemporary Puerto Rican artist Antonio Fonseca Vasquez: Still Puerto Rican.

Antonio Fonseca Vasquez’s art employs various media and materials to conceptually explore themes of identity, shared experiences and inherent challenges. Still Puerto Rican invites viewers to engage in a conversation about our social biases and preconceptions surrounding cultural identity.

In the present polarization within our political climate with its present focus on national identity, our understanding of what it means to be Puerto Rican in the United States is more relevant than ever.

An internationally celebrated artist and educator, Vázquez’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Acervo, Historia y Futuro exhibition at the Museum of Art of Caguas and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico.

Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico in 1972, Vázquez received a Bachelor’s degree in Printmaking from the School of Plastic Arts in San Juan, Puerto Rico and a Master of Arts from Cornell University in 1998. Presently he is a Professor of Practice at Clark University in the Visual and Performing Arts Department.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

The opening reception is on Sunday, September 28, from 5 to 7 pm. It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

There will also be a Gallery Talk on Thursday, October 2nd, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street or on the street.

Listen to Gail Hunt, host of Art on the Air, talk with the artist, Antonio Fonseca Vasquez.
Originally aired September 25, 2025.

As temperatures begin to dip and the leaves turn color, we celebrate the Autumnal Equinox with a soundtrack for the changing season. We hope for crisp air in Fall with Nina Simone’s plea, “Chilly Winds Don’t Blow,” and Sarah Vaughan’s take on Kurt Weill’s “September Song.” For the harvest, we spin Johnny Cash’s “Pickin’ Time.” And with shorter days and longer nights, it’s Ahmad Jamal playing “Old Devil Moon” and Van Morrison with “Moondance.” Plus, we pay tribute to the late Aretha Franklin, whose spirit prevails for all seasons, with memories from her Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler, studio musicians from Muscle Shoals, and her father, Reverend C.L. Franklin.

Sunday, September 28:

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Valentino’s Ghost”, a film by Michael Singh, who joins us to discuss his 2012 film.

Valentino’s Ghost explores how depictions of Arabs and Muslims have changed from the romanticized image of Rudolph Valentino’s The Sheik to contemporary representations of evil.

Narrated by Mike Farrell, the documentary film exposes the way America’s foreign policy agenda in the Middle East influences Hollywood and mainstream corporate media portrayals of Arabs and Muslims.

Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, Italy, to a standing ovation, Valentino’s Ghost tracks the transition from the Arab as Romantic Hero to the Arab today as the embodiment of evil.

Designated a New York Times Critics’ Pick.

Run time is 1 hour and 33 minutes. NR.

Showtime: Sunday, September 28, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

Thursday, October 2 and Friday, October 3: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Megadoc”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Megadoc”, a film by Mike Figgis.

A raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey in creating his self-financed passion project, Megalopolis.

The bold and unrelenting epic returns in Mike Figgis’ portrait of Coppola’s creative process – weaving together archival material, unfiltered cast interviews, and a close-up view of how the legendary filmmaker drew from Roman history, political allegory, and his own singular vision to shape the world of Megalopolis.

This isn’t a record of a production on the brink, it’s a personal memoir unfolding in real time.

“…Impressive to see the indomitable Coppola in full rhetorical flow.” – The Guardian

Run time is 1 hour and 47 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Thursday, October 2, 7 pm, and Friday, October 3, 7 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Saturday, October 4: Lisa Marie & Johnny Juxo featuring The Hip-Shakin’ Horns at the Frontroom

Lisa Marie & Johnny Juxo featuring The Hip-Shakin’ Horns, brought to you by The Blues Hog!

Combine the magnetic forces of Lisa Marie on vocals and percussion; Johnny Juxo on piano, organ, squeezebox and vocals; truly energetic performances and the songwriting skills of two of New England’s premier musicians – and you’ve got one helluva party- Roots, rock ‘n’ roll & boogie woogie soul!

The dynamic duo of Lisa Marie and Johnny Juxo can be found performing all over the Northeast, raising a ruckus and joyful noise with a hearty helping of early New Orleans rhythm ‘n’ blues and a spicy stew of saucy originals.

“Wild tales of misadventures, of long nights on the road, misbehavior and heartache, and songs you ain’t ever heard before… In a nutshell: F-U-N!!”

Showtime: Saturday, October 4, 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets $15 cash at the door.
