IN The HAROLD STEVENS GALLERY:

Now, through October 27: Antonio Fonseca Vasquez – Still Puerto Rican

The Harold Stevens Gallery at WCUW presents an exhibition by contemporary Puerto Rican artist Antonio Fonseca Vasquez: Still Puerto Rican.

Antonio Fonseca Vasquez’s art employs various media and materials to conceptually explore themes of identity, shared experiences and inherent challenges. Still Puerto Rican invites viewers to engage in a conversation about our social biases and preconceptions surrounding cultural identity.

In the present polarization within our political climate with its present focus on national identity, our understanding of what it means to be Puerto Rican in the United States is more relevant than ever.

An internationally celebrated artist and educator, Vázquez’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Acervo, Historia y Futuro exhibition at the Museum of Art of Caguas and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico.

Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico in 1972, Vázquez received a Bachelor’s degree in Printmaking from the School of Plastic Arts in San Juan, Puerto Rico and a Master of Arts from Cornell University in 1998. Presently he is a Professor of Practice at Clark University in the Visual and Performing Arts Department.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street or on the street.

Thursday, October 16 thru Saturday, October 18: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Twinless”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Twinless”, a film by James Sweeney.

In Twinless, two young men meet in a twin support group and form an unlikely friendship. Roman (Dylan O’Brien) and Dennis (James Sweeney) both search for solace and an identity without their other halves and soon become inseparable outside the group.

But when Roman meets Dennis’ ebullient co-worker, Marcie (Aisling Franciosi), all is revealed to be not what it seems, as each man harbors secrets that could unravel everything.

“Just trust me when I say that it’s extremely clever and full of surprises, and reinforces that writer, director, and co-star James Sweeney is a bold and refreshing filmmaker to watch.” – RogerEbert.com

Run time is 1 hour and 40 minutes. R (Sexual content | nudity | language).

Showtimes: Thursday, October 16, 7 pm, Friday, October 17, 7 pm, and Saturday, October 18, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

Sunday, October 19: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Messiah of Evil (1973)”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Messiah of Evil (1973)”, a film by Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck. Dan Ducas of Nuclear Eye Fanzine will introduce the film as one of his personal favorites.

An unsung classic of 70’s horror, Messiah of Evil is an ultra eerie and unsettling nightmare—a grimly fiendish offbeat art horror masterpiece that oozes the kind of succulent dream dread slathered atmosphere that can drive one wild.

After losing contact with her artist father, Arletty travels to the west coast. Though she doesn’t find him, she meets Thom, an odd wealthy man who’s travelling with 2 lovers, Toni and Laura, to meet her father. She reads his diary and realises there’s something strange with the residents of this California town: the town is under the influence of a strange cult that weeps tears of blood and hungers for human flesh.

“Despite and because of all of its production problems, Messiah of Evil is a uniquely frightening experience, dripping with dread, unexpectedly graphic violence, and unexplainably hypnotic artistry. “ – Genre Grinder

Run time is 1 hour and 30 minutes. R (Mild nudity | Moderate violence, gore, and intense scenes).

Showtime: Sunday, October 19, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Wednesday, October 22: “Motown and The Civil Rights Movement” at the Frontroom

How did Motown become “the music that inspiured a generation?”

In this entertaining and educational multimedia lecture program, WCUW’s own “Motown Tom” Ingrassia will share the story of the impact Motown and its artists had in mid-60s America.

During a turbulent time in our history, Motown helped to bridge the gaps between the races. It didn’t matter if you were black or white, rich or poor, male or female…we were ALL listening to, dancing to—and buying—Motown’s music!

Having worked for Mary Wilson, of The Supremes—as well as other 60s music artists—”Motown Tom” has learned this story from the inside out…and he brings that insider information to The FrontRoom with this presentation.

Showtime: Wednesday, October 22, 6 pm. Tickets $15 cash at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA.

Thursday, October 23: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Mulholland Drive”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Mulholland Drive”, a film by David Lynch. This is a special Cinema Worcester Anniversary screening!

We screen one of our all-time favorite films every year to celebrate our very first screening at the former Sprinkler Factory art gallery in October of 2007. We’ll have trivia, prizes, and special snacks!

A dark-haired woman (Laura Elena Harring) is left amnesiac after a car crash. She wanders the streets of Los Angeles in a daze before taking refuge in an apartment. There she is discovered by Betty (Naomi Watts), a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress.

Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita’s true identity. The story is set in a dream-like Los Angeles, spoilt neither by traffic jams nor smog.

Run time is 2 hours and 26 minutes. R (Some Strong Sexuality | Language | Violence).

Showtimes: Thursday, October 23, 7 pm.
