IN The HAROLD STEVENS GALLERY:

Now, through October 27: Antonio Fonseca Vasquez – Still Puerto Rican

The Harold Stevens Gallery at WCUW presents an exhibition by contemporary Puerto Rican artist Antonio Fonseca Vasquez: Still Puerto Rican.

Antonio Fonseca Vasquez’s art employs various media and materials to conceptually explore themes of identity, shared experiences and inherent challenges. Still Puerto Rican invites viewers to engage in a conversation about our social biases and preconceptions surrounding cultural identity.

In the present polarization within our political climate with its present focus on national identity, our understanding of what it means to be Puerto Rican in the United States is more relevant than ever.

An internationally celebrated artist and educator, Vázquez’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Acervo, Historia y Futuro exhibition at the Museum of Art of Caguas and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico.

Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico in 1972, Vázquez received a Bachelor’s degree in Printmaking from the School of Plastic Arts in San Juan, Puerto Rico and a Master of Arts from Cornell University in 1998. Presently he is a Professor of Practice at Clark University in the Visual and Performing Arts Department.

Gallery hours: Mondays noon to 3 pm; Wednesdays 2 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 3 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street or on the street.

Friday, October 3: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Megadoc”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Megadoc”, a film by Mike Figgis.

A raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey in creating his self-financed passion project, Megalopolis.

The bold and unrelenting epic returns in Mike Figgis’ portrait of Coppola’s creative process – weaving together archival material, unfiltered cast interviews, and a close-up view of how the legendary filmmaker drew from Roman history, political allegory, and his own singular vision to shape the world of Megalopolis.

This isn’t a record of a production on the brink, it’s a personal memoir unfolding in real time.

“…Impressive to see the indomitable Coppola in full rhetorical flow.” – The Guardian

Run time is 1 hour and 47 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Thursday, October 2, 7 pm, and Friday, October 3, 7 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.

Sunday, October 5: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Riefenstahl”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Riefenstahl”, a film by Andres Veiel.

Leni Riefenstahl is considered one of the most controversial women of the 20th century as an artist and a Nazi propagandist. But how could she become the Reich’s preeminent filmmaker and keep denying any closer ties to Hitler and Goebbels?

This film explores Leni Riefenstahl’s artistic legacy and her complex ties to the Nazi regime, juxtaposing her self-portrayal with evidence suggesting awareness of the regime’s atrocities.

Run time is 1 hour and 58 minutes. NR.

Showtime: Sunday, October 5, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

Thursday, October 9 thru Sunday, October 12: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “The Librarians”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “The Librarians”, a film by Kim A. Snyder.

Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over communities.

In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts.

Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

“A gripping story of what is at stake when curiosity and thinking are endangered.” – Variety

“A different kind of superhero movie.” – The Hollywood Reporter

Run time is 1 hour and 32 minutes. NR.

Showtimes: Thursday, October 9, 7 pm, Friday, October 10, 7 pm, and Sunday, October 12, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

In addition, there will be a special screening on Saturday, October 11, 1 pm, at the Worcester Public Library, 3 Salem St, Worcester. Free admission, and there will be a discussion period.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA. Parking in the Clark University lot across the street, or on the street.
