This week, we feel the Pan-Latin vibe and remember the late Flaco Jiménez and Eddie Palmieri. San Antonio native and king of the conjunto accordion, Jiménez recalls his father’s influence on his playing. And NuYorican jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri talks about reshaping Latin bands with his La Perfecta group in the early 1960s. Sunday, September 21: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Tokyo Story”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Tokyo Story”, a film by Yasujiro Ozu.

The director’s own favorite of his 54 movies, Yasujiro Ozu’s 1953 film Tokyo Story surveys the Japanese family in the American-influenced post-war reconstruction period.

The story is a simple one. It concerns the visits paid to their children in Osaka and Tokyo by an elderly couple (Tomi, 68, and Shukishi, 70) from the southern seaside town of Onomichi, a quiet fishing port and traditional centre of Buddhist devotion, which was then a day and a night’s train journey from the high-rises, smoking factories and modernity of Japan’s frenetic capital.

Often topping lists of the best films of all time, and a great influence on many great directors of the last half century, not least for its purity of expression, this remains one of the most approachable and moving of all cinema’s masterpieces.

“Tokyo Story is a Yasujiro Ozu masterpiece whose rewarding complexity has lost none of its power more than half a century on.” – Rotten Tomatoes

“In this exquisite merging of specific and universal, infinite and infinitesimal, Tokyo Story perhaps most clearly illuminates that Ozu is not the most Japanese of filmmakers, but the most human.” – Slant Magazine

“One of the greatest films of all time” – Roger Ebert

Run time is 2 hours and 17 minutes. NR.

Showtime: Sunday, September 21, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.
