Thursday, February 20, and Friday, February 21: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr. with R.E.M.- A Silents Synced Film”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr. with R.E.M.’s Monster and New Adventures in Hi Fi – A Silents Synced Film “.

Where silent film and alt rock collide: Sherlock Jr. (1924) like you’ve never seen it before! An innovative cinematic experience that breathes new life into the timeless 1924 silent film Sherlock Jr.

By syncing Keaton’s brilliant slapstick comedy and masterful physical performances with R.E.M.’s Monster and New Adventures in Hi Fi, the result is a vibrant, surreal experience where Keaton’s absurdly funny adventures as a bumbling, yet lovable detective are accompanied by songs that match the emotional beats, themes, and whimsy of his world.

Run time is 1 hour 48 minutes. NR.

Saturday, February 22: Cinema Worcester at the FRONTROOM Presents “Lynch/Oz”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Lynch/Oz”.

The themes, images, and cultural vernacular of Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz continue to haunt David Lynch’s art and filmography from his very first short, The Alphabet, to his latest series, Twin Peaks: The Return.

Arguably, no filmmaker has so consistently drawn inspiration—consciously or unconsciously—from a single work. Is David Lynch trapped in the land of Oz? If so, can we derive a new appreciation for Lynch’s body of work from taking a closer look at how it intersects and communicates with The Wizard of Oz?

In turn, do Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway or The Elephant Man have something to say about the enduring resonance of America’s most beloved holiday movie?

Through six distinct perspectives, and narrated by some of contemporary cinema’s most exciting voices, Lynch/Oz will take us down the proverbial rabbit hole, help us re-experience and re-interpret The Wizard of Oz by way of David Lynch, to deliver a whole new appreciation for Lynch’s symbolism through the lens of his greatest influence.

This exhibition also includes a space where we would like visitors to reflect on what they think is identity and what exactly shaped them to be who they are.

We hope everyone that visits find something that they share a connection within the art that was selected while walking through the exhibit.

Gallery hours start with a public reception on Monday, February 17, 5 to 7 pm. Thereafter, the gallery is open Wednesdays 12 to 4 pm; Thursdays 1 to 5 pm; Fridays 11 am to 2 pm; Saturdays 11 am to 1 pm; or by appointment. Free to all!

The Harold Stevens Gallery is located inside WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA.

Monday, February 17 to Monday, March 3: “Threads of Us” at the Harold Stevens Gallery

“Threads of Us”, sponsored by the Clark University Photography Society, comes to the Harold Stevens Gallery February 17 to March 3.

Threads of Us is an exploration of identity through assorted styles of portraits. Self-portraits are not just portraits of a person, but an image that reflects someone’s personality and characteristics. There is no strict rule on how a person can see themselves. These portraits are meant to highlight what exactly makes a person unique. People are a collection of everything around them; people they hold close, their home, and even items. The categories are sorted into external and internal, the things that surround a person physically and the personal aspects held internally.

The focus of the exhibition is to allow the artists to display their lives and personality and show it off. Threads of Us is meant to show that we are all intertwined, not just by an imaginary, invisible string, but by our shared love for things no matter how different people are from each other. This is meant to allow the artists to showcase their cultures and what has shaped them into the person that they are today

The categories of the exhibit include:

– Self Portraits of every artist that submitted to the exhibition

– Passions in Motion, featuring people doing the things that they love

– Loved Ones, showing off the people the artists hold dearest to them

– Trinkets and Tchotchkes that resemble who the artists are, found scattered around their homes

– Places, where home can be found

– And the miscellaneous, random things found everywhere that have no category, but significant personal value to the artist

ONCE AGAIN THERE IS A REAL MOVIE THEATER IN WORCESTER!
