Thursday, April 3, and Friday, April 4: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl”, a film by Rungano Nyoni.

A vibrant exploration of family and social mores, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl marks another superb effort from writer-director Rungano Nyoni.

On an empty road in the middle of the night, Shula stumbles across the body of her uncle. As funeral proceedings begin around them, she and her cousins bring to light the buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family, in filmmaker Rungano Nyoni’s surreal and vibrant reckoning with the lies we tell ourselves.

Blending dark comedy with poetic realism, Nyoni critiques the traditional expectation to bury pain with the dead as a family of women refuses to feign grief. Featuring a striking visual style and haunting sound design, the film culminates in a defiant protest against silence and denial, suggesting that memory and truth will always endure.

Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Loving Vincent”

Run time is 1 hour 34 minutes. PG-13 (Animated Violence).

Showtimes: Saturday, April 5, 1 pm, and Sunday, April 6, 1 pm.

Tickets $13.58 general admission, $11.44 senior/student with ID, $10.38 for WCUW members (processing fees included). Purchase tickets online.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA.

Saturday, April 5, and Sunday, April 6: Cinema Worcester at the Frontroom Presents “Loving Vincent”

Cinema Worcester in conjunction with the WCUW Frontroom presents “Loving Vincent”, a film by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman.

The man was carrying nothing; his hands clasped to a fresh bullet wound leaking blood from his belly. This was Vincent van Gogh, then a little known artist; now the most famous artist in the world.

His tragic death has long been known, what has remained a mystery is how and why he came to be shot. Loving Vincent tells that story.

A story of a young man who comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist’s final letter and ends up investigating his final days there. Loving Vincent’s dazzling visual achievements make this Van Gogh biopic well worth seeking out.

The film is depicted in oil-painted animation (similar to the band “A-ha’s” rotoscoped 1985 music video for “Take On Me“).

 included). Purchase tickets online.

Saturday, March 15 to Tuesday, April 21: “Who Do You Love? By Rosemary LeBeau” at the Harold Stevens Gallery

Rosemary LeBeau, showing “Who Do You Love?”, comes to the Harold Stevens Gallery, March 15 to April 21.

LeBeau is an artist living and working in Central Massachusetts. She works in multiple mediums and disciplines and always deeply explores the matters that resonate most strongly in her soul. She hopes to remind the viewer of the sweetness of their own youth and the joy that simple reminiscences can bring. Now she asks you…” who do YOU love?”

Saturday, April 26: Troy Mercy and Hadley Lloyd at the FRONTROOM

Presented by WCUW’s Friday Night Blues with Darren and the Mayor.

Saturday, April 26, 7:30 pm. Tickets $15 at the door.

The WCUW Frontroom is located at 910 Main St., Worcester MA.

Saturday, April 26: Troy Mercy and Hadley Lloyd at the FRONTROOM

Come see Troy Mercy and Hadley Lloyd at the WCUW Frontroom.

Troy Mercy and Hadley Lloyd bring the raw sound of Electric

Blues into the 21st Century. A power-duo that plays brave new blues. With Troy on vocal, guitar, and harmonica; and Hadley on drums and vocal.

Troy toured as guitarist with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Booker T. Jones. And Hadley is fresh on the scene with surprising grooves. She heats up the stage like a spike of lightning.

Pushing boundaries with fearless performance, artful lyrics, hooks and melody, they extend the tradition and create the future.

“This duo is like Lightnin’ Hopkins playing with The Small Faces while David Lynch films it.” -Alan Smithee

Decoding Brain Disorders: The Role of RNA and the Fight for a Cure

WHO: You and local scientists!

WHAT: A Science Café discussion of neurodegenerative disease

WHEN: April 8th, 6-7pm

WHERE: WCUW Front Room, 910 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01610

WHY: To meet scientists in your community and learn about research happening at UMass Chan that might impact your life.

Neurodevelopmental disorders, where brain development is delayed, and neurodegenerative diseases, where parts of our brains and other nerves are destroyed. These neuronal disorders affect millions of Americans, meaning that thousands of people in Worcester and central Massachusetts are affected. Some of these diseases are caused by mistakes in RNA, the messenger molecule inside our cells that helps our cells copy information from DNA and build the machines they need to live. Two such conditions - Fragile X Syndrome (neurodevelopmental) and C9ORF72-related ALS/FTD (neurodegenerative) - are currently being studied at UMass Chan. Scientists in your community are working to make medicines that can prevent RNA mistakes from causing problems in our cells using a technology called antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), which has huge potential to lead to cures for these brain diseases. Join two of our scientists, Dr. Sneha Shah and Dr. Sandra Almeida, for an informal discussion of their research at your local radio station, WCUW.

We look forward to seeing you there on April 8th at 6 pm.
