WDIY Tops PA Assoc. of Broadcasters' 2022 Awards with 5 Wins
This past week, the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters announced the winners of their 2022 Excellence in Broadcasting Awards. We are excited to share that WDIY was the recipient of five awards, the highest total for a single radio station across Pennsylvania! WDIY's five award total was only matched by KYW in Philadelphia who also picked up five awards. WDIY received awards for a range of outstanding feature stories and public affairs programs as well as an award for outstanding use of digital media.

Live theater is back in our area high schools and so are the Freddy Awards! Join host Silagh White in a conversation with two local actors, Matt Byrne and Bex Vermeulen, who share insights into their high school theater experience during the pandemic. Jamie Balliet, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Freddy Awards Coordinator at the State Theatre in Easton joins in during the show's second half to talk about the upcoming season of high school theater.

Paul Willistein examines the social impact and recent decline of rom-coms. The romantic comedy, or “the rom-com,” lives on though, thanks to J Lo - Jennifer Lopez. In her latest movie Marry Me, with Owen Wilson, she stars as a pop music artist who spontaneously marries a man in her audience. Paul Willistein of the Lehigh Valley Press reviews the romantic comedy.

We'll hear from a wide array of vocalists from Joe Williams to Gregory Porter, and Billie Holliday to Cecile McLorin Salvant. All this, plus a set of tunes related to Presidents' Day.

A big celebration of Presidents' Day with songs from Percy Mayfield, Little Walter, Johnny Cash, the Animaniacs, and more. Soul from Little Richard, Big Joe Turner with Willie "The Lion" Smith (!), Sacred Steel from Robert Randolph and Aubrey Ghent, Country blues from the Depression Years, and a Barry Goldberg number featuring Mike Bloomfield and Frank Zappa on guitars. All this and clever banter.

Inspired by a listener’s call last week suggesting that host Martin Richter has been neglecting the great Russian composers, this Thursday’s WDIY Classics will feature music composed mostly by great Russian composers.
The program opens with the Prince Igor Overture by Alexander Borodin and continues with Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The second hour begins with one of Tchaikovsky’s monumental String Quartets. The third hour begins with Prokofiev’s final symphony and continues with the chilling Black Mass piano sonata by Alexander Scriabin in a violent performance by Vladimir Horowitz.
The remainder of the program is filled out with a Symphonie concertante for 2 clarinets, bassoon, 2 horns, flute and orchestra by Johann Christian Bach, the Paris Symphony by Mozart, and a Timpani Partita by Georg Druschetzky.
