From the Principal's Desk
From Ms. Day: Dear Wharton Families, thank you so much for your support of the Doig Family during this difficult time. If you would like to drop off any cards or notes of remembrance there will be tables set up in the driveway on Wednesday and Thursday with people there to collect acknowledgements in loving memory of Melina Flores Doig. Please do not get out of your car. These remembrances will be given to her family.
Wharton End-of-Year Closeout: Pick Up Student Belongings & Drop Off School Items. Mark your calendar for this coming Wednesday, May 27 & Thursday, May 28 for a drive-thru process that will be in place for dropping off of any library books, textbooks, calculators and possibly chromebooks that students have borrowed. You will also be able to pick up any student belongings that they may not have been able to take home before the school closure. See additional details in the link below.
Nurse's Notes
Happy Memorial Day weekend! We all are tired of being at home, but we still need to be careful. Hand sanitizer on the go! Make sure you bring some with you in your car. Continue to social distance as much as possible. Mask up in crowded areas. The virus hasn’t gone away yet, it is still active and will make a resurgence if we are not playing it safe.

Please go to https://www.houstonisd.org/counseling if you need some extra support. When we feel helpless, it is useful to do something we can control, like exercise, art or even yard work. Let your children know they can still chat with me on TEAMS, if they need to talk.

Please read these comprehensive guidelines for opening schools in the fall. It will give you some insight on how schools will potentially look in August:

If you have any health or wellness questions, Dana.Bethancourt@houstonisd.org or visit Nurse Dana's Clinic on our website.

Hang in there! Have a great summer! Your School Nurse, Dana

Library Services

Read Houston Read Goes Virtual: To keep our students engaged in reading even while they’re learning remotely, the Department of Library Services, in partnership with the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and the Children's Museum of Houston, has launched the Virtual Read Houston Read Program, which will run May 7 - July 2, 2020. Current Read Houston Read volunteers are invited to record themselves reading one of nearly 50 available Read Houston Read and Reading Roundup book titles. Recorded videos will be shared with participating Read Houston Read campuses and uploaded for students to view. Volunteers may also facilitate a virtual book-chat session with a Read Houston Read book/activity guide in realtime with first-grade classrooms or student groups using Microsoft Teams.

We are excited to see this valuable program continue in a new format to meet the ever-changing needs of our community. If you have any questions regarding the Read Houston Read online program, please email HISD Library Services at LibraryServices@houstonisd.org .
Houston Zoo News: (The following message is being shared with you directly from the Houston Zoo.) Everyone here at the Houston Zoo is always thinking of you guys and all the amazing things you are doing to help us save animals in the wild. We recently did a blog post about some of our school partners that are helping to save lions in the wild. I thought it might bring a smile to you all.

We wish to share this link with you and your students/ family so that they may see what other schools in the area are doing.
